    Betty Vanderwielen|Nov 12, 2020

SEELEY LAKE – Seaman Leon (Bud) Anderson was off duty and on liberty in San Francisco when World War II ended. "I was on Market Street when the news broke," he said. "Everybody was talking about it and Market Street in San Francisco was wild!" Born on a ranch near Havre in 1926, Anderson later moved with his family to Seeley Lake. When his eighteenth birthday approached, he knew he would be drafted. He chose to enlist in the Navy instead. Boot Camp was in Farragut, Idaho, at the south end of L...

  • COVID strikes Seeley Lake

    Andi Bourne, Pathfinder|Nov 12, 2020

SEELEY LAKE - "I think the hardest part of this whole thing was I just felt horribly guilty," said Seeley Lake resident Emily Rindal who tested positive for coronavirus in early September. "I know it wasn't my fault and I didn't know I had it. But ruining people's plans for Labor Day and having the fear of what if they die, what if they are hospitalized, that guilt just killed me." Rindal was not alone in her mental struggle with the virus that has changed how everyone interacts. Even though it...

  • Keeping it local for the holidays

    Andi and Nathan Bourne|Nov 12, 2020

As the Holiday Season approaches, many of the annual events that our communities know and love are being cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic including Old West Christmas in Ovando, the Rich Ranch Community Appreciation Day, Christmas Comes Home in Potomac, the Seeley-Swan Mountain Bells concert and the Frostbite Festival in Condon. Even though crafters and artisans may have had ample time to produce their wares, the opportunities to sell them is also greatly diminished with the cancellation of most of the craft shows and holiday bazaars that...

  • Thank you for your vote!

    Shannon OBrien, Missoula, Montana|Nov 12, 2020

Dear friends, thank you for electing me to represent you as the next Montana State Senator for District 46. I am grateful beyond words for your support. My opponent Niki Sardot, ran a fair and civilized race. Niki graciously reached out to me in congratulations, it was a class act. I’m relieved, grateful, honored and ready to get to work. Mostly however, I recognize that we are a nation divided. Let’s look for the good in others, help out when we can, smile and give a wave to our neighbors. It’s so simple, but so urgently needed right now....

  • The message from Republican sweep

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Montana|Nov 12, 2020

The Seeley-Swan, and Montana generally, stayed red this past election cycle. What are the messages in this continued move to the right? Voters are apparently demanding less government, less in-your-face regulation and permitting, lower taxes and, presumably, fewer government “services.” That might even go as far as reduced funding for public education, welfare assistance and environmental protection programs. So, now that we have a Republican governor, a republican legislature and we have re-elected Republican Mike Hopkins to represent us up...

  • Hang'n 'er up

    Dale Terrillion|Nov 12, 2020

Along the back trails of my memories this time of the year was all the hunts and the desire to gather winter's meat. Didn't seem to matter the weather in them there days, hunched up near some cover wait' n to surprise ol' mossyhorns. It all started when I was twelve. Traded an otter hide for an ancient single barrel 12 gauge Stevens. The only way you could open the barrel was drive the pin out, so I left it loaded unless I shot a grouse. Mom was scared to death I'd shoot myself. Told brother...

  • Making progress in spite of COVID

Wendy Dalrymple, Pyramid Mountain Lumber CPA and Controller|Nov 12, 2020

When COVID-19 first popped up in the news, we weren't too worried it would affect us here in Seeley Lake. Then it became a pandemic and things changed. We urged our employees to follow all recommended precautions, but were still left with many questions about whether the virus would reach Seeley Lake, and if it did, what would that look like for our workforce. We identified that our primary exposure to outside personnel is in shipping. We took extra precautions in our shipping office by...

  • Ross continues complaints about scaling

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Nov 12, 2020

If the early history of Seeley Lake is intertwined with the lumber industry, the rise of the United States Forest Service is incontrovertibly intertwined with Seeley Lake and in particular with the Big Blackfoot Timber Sale of 1907-1910. Historian and member of the Camp Paxson Preservation Board Gary Williams has been researching that sale. The Seeley Swan Pathfinder will be bringing some of the interesting bits of information he has discovered about logging in the Seeley Lake area and also abou...
