County sees political divide in urban and rural areas

MISSOULA COUNTY - The political divide between the rural and urban areas of Missoula County were seen in the results of the District 1 County Commissioner race and the vote over referendum 130 this year. Ballot issues that saw more unity among the County were CI-190 and 118.

The County has a total of 52 precincts. There are 33 urban precincts within Missoula's city limits and the remaining 19 are outside the city. There was a 79.55% voter turnout in Missoula County, just slightly below the 80.55% statewide turnout.

In the District 1 County Commissioner race, a total of 68,489 votes were cast, 40,553 (59%) of which went to Democratic candidate Juanita Vero while 27,936 (41%) went to Republican candidate Alan Ault. For the 33 urban precincts, 28 voted majority Democrat. Among the 19 rural precincts, 16 voted majority Republican.

The urban precincts contributed 48,359 votes to the race while rural precincts contributed 20,130. Urban precincts gave Vero 32,142 votes and Ault 16,217 votes. Rural precincts gave Vero 8,411 votes and Ault 11,719 votes.

Responses were also mixed when it came to the vote on Referendum 130 which prevents local governments from regulating the ability to carry permitted concealed firearms. A total of 69,606 votes were cast with 40,395 (58%) opposed and 29,211 (41%) in favor. Despite the county opposition however, it passed on a statewide level with 51% of the vote.

Of the 33 urban precincts, 30 voted against the referendum. Of the 19 rural precincts, 16 voted in favor of it.

Individual precincts across Missoula County were unified in favor of initiatives CI-190 and CI-118 which respectively legalized the recreational purchase of marijuana as well as amended the Montana Constitution to allow an initiative that would establish a minimum age to possess, buy and use marijuana.
