God is not on our side

Our country has gone through a very troubling year to say the least. The anticipation of the recent election defined as much of 2020 as has the coronavirus. Everything that has taken place this year has caused many sleepless nights and anxiety.

A large part of the uncertainty hinged on the outcome of the recent election. The results of elections are also described in terms of who won or lost, or what issue won or lost. The elections end up being about sides, and what side ends up winning in the end.

The Bible reminds us that God is not on our side, at least not in the way we might assume. As God's people went out to battle, we see in Joshua 5:13-15, "When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, "Are you friend or foe?" "Neither one," he replied. "I am the commander of the LORD's army." At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. "I am at your command," Joshua said. "What do you want your servant to do?" The commander of the LORD's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did as he was told." (New Living Translation)

In this event, God's servants were thinking in terms of whose side everyone was on. The Lord sent His messenger to accomplish His own purposes. Everything in the Bible is about God's plans and purposes, and not about our own plans.

As we face the other side of the election, we must be reminded that God is not on MY side. Instead, WE always need to be on God's side. God expects our love, devotion, obedience...and especially our trust during these difficult days. Trusting and serving God is the side we need to be on.

Everyone had different expectations for the elections, but we should not lose hope, or even declare victory. Our primary hope in troubling times is only found through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Likewise, the victory that truly matters is that we are saved through Jesus and enjoy the promise of heaven.
