District Manager Jean Curtiss informed the Board at the end of her Manager’s report that she had seen a draft of a lawsuit against the District. However, at th...

  • Spread out the giving, cover all ages in generosity

    Steve Thompson, Seeley Lake, Montana|Dec 24, 2020

SEELEY LAKE - ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas...’ I would like to begin by wishing each and everyone in the Seeley/Swan area a very safe, relaxing and rejuvenating holiday season. This is a season of giving and receiving. Mountain Lakes Presbyterian Church has been involved with the local “Giving Tree” for the past 30+ years. This has allowed us to connect with many families in the area and, hopefully, bring a bit of cheer to them. The “Santa Helper Patrol” has just finished wrapping all of the presents an...

  • State leadership needs to carefully consider direction

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Montana|Dec 24, 2020

The Federal Government has only the powers specifically enumerated to it...all other powers accrue to the states. That’s the way the U.S. Constitution reads. However we all know, because it controls the big purse strings, the Feds make state and local governments beggar “socialist” states, ready and waiting for the myriad federal aid program handouts. And because the Fed controls these purse strings, it dictates much of what state and local leaders do. Our new Montana leaders, many of whom will take office next month, need to carefully exami...

    Thomas Beers, Missoula, Montana|Dec 24, 2020

The following is a poem written by my girlfriend, Jasmine. I wanted to share it as I believe it captures our adventures in and around the beautiful mountains surrounding Seeley Lake, but also is a reminder to stop and look at life from a different perspective. Thomas Beers The Pair That Started Everything By: Jasmine Schreckendgust Awake Dive into you and feel immediate comfort Vast country awaits Each memory starts with you Now begin my gray and blue Take my feet Unwrap this earth Right beneath me Each step unravels The First True Test Open th...

  • Holiday goodwill

    Ken Silverstro PhD|Dec 24, 2020

Since it's the holiday season, I believe it's fitting to describe some psychological traits associated with the season. During this season, people are more open, kinder and giving to others. Even to people they don't know! Why is that? There are many possible answers but let's explore a few from a psychological perspective. First of all, people let their egos (sense of identity and control) relax a bit. This means they are less territorial, less argumentative and less adamant about being right....

  • The marathon of collaboration

Claire Muller, Executive Director, Seeley Lake Community Foundation|Dec 24, 2020

Have you ever had an idea that could benefit more than just you? Maybe it is something you love to do and want to share it, maybe you've seen it done in another community, or maybe you've even tried and didn't get the momentum or support you needed the first time around. Over the past 20 years at the Seeley Lake Community Foundation (SLCF), we've watched these small ideas grow into community-wide projects that bring benefits to so many beyond the instigator. When we can articulate a common goal...

  • The meaning of Christmas

Pastor Erik Iverson, Faith Lutheran in Condon and Holy Cross Lutheran in Seeley Lake|Dec 24, 2020

Throughout all human history, most all cultures have found themselves in times of turmoil, division and disarray. In some ways, we can arguably say that about our own society currently as we contend with a number of different issues. On the surface it can be, and is, overwhelming for many. So the overriding question is...what is to be done about it? It really all depends upon what...or in Whom...one places their trust. As of this reading, Christmas Eve/Day may have already passed. For many, it is but a day’s respite in a year fraught with a m...

  • Who sends Christmas cards?

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Dec 24, 2020

Historical purists might claim the first Christmas card was the elaborately decorated, 33 inch by 24 inch three-panel manuscript given to King James I of England (aka King James IV of Scotland) in 1611. The center panel contained a rose with a Christmas and New Year greeting around it, while the side panels had four poems and a song. Among non-purists, Sir Henry Cole is more commonly accepted as the originator of the Christmas card in 1843. According to the standards of Victorian England, it...
