  • Fire Board finds budget errors, hears from concerned citizen

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 30, 2023

The Seeley Lake Rural Fire District Board caught up on expenses and other happenings at the department, but some actions were hindered because of accounting errors discovered during its Nov. 21 meeting. The board also heard from a citizen concerned with patient care. The fire board did not meet in October, so the meeting was to approve expenses for the last two months. The board approved the September expenses, which reached over $70,000. That money paid for a new type one fire truck and new extraction tools. The October expenses, closer to a...

  • Cowboy Claus rides again

    Jean Pocha, of the Pathfinder|Nov 30, 2023

Cowboy Claus made his annual visit to the Ovando Christmas Fest for the 23rd time. He rode into town on Bill and Dena Hooker's faithful steed Nic, who has been carrying Cowboy Claus to the Christmas Fest for 15 years. This years' celebration on Nov. 25 included craft vendors filling the Ovando gym and Rob Henrekin's wagon with his team of black percherons ferrying visitors back and forth from downtown Ovando to the gym. Children's activities happened at the church and Christmas trees were...

  • Free music classes offered for students

    Jenny Rohrer, of Alpine Artisans|Nov 30, 2023

The teacher shortage in Montana hits communities like the Seeley-Swan Valley hard, and that is particularly true with music teachers. The most recent music teachers for Seeley-Swan High School, Seeley Elementary and the Swan Valley School left for other teaching jobs after several years in the schools, leaving our schools searching to find replacements. Seeley Elementary was able to persuade former kindergarten teacher Sheila Devins, a 2022 finalist for Montana Teacher of the Year, to stay on...

I will provide primary medical care to patients of all ages, and I am especially excited to announce that I will provide a new service for Seeley area residents: prenatal care. I have many reasons to be excited about serving residents of the Seeley Lake area. First, I believe strongly that rural communities should have access to excellent healthcare. I have always had a heart f...

  • The church necessary for salvation

Diana Taylor, Defendress of the Catholic Faith|Nov 30, 2023

As Advent begins, may we reflect upon Jesus, our Savior, who by the riches of God’s grace took on flesh by being born of the Blessed Virgin to be the perfect blood sacrifice for our redemption and for the forgiveness of sins (see Ephesians 1:7). By contemplating God’s holy word, praying daily, and filling our souls with sacramental grace through His Church, let our belief and repentance grow virtues of faith, hope, and love to produce the fruit of joy and peace. “...God our Savior who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of...

  • Smashed liver for Sunday dinner

    Alan Muskett, of the Pathfinder|Nov 30, 2023

After I finished high school, I underwent 16 years of additional training—college, medical school, surgical residency, surgical fellowship—before I started a real job. I was 34 years old and deep red broke. Finally, I thought, I am done with the educational waterboarding. Not so fast. The last 32 years have been a continuous, Sisyphean series of courses, seminars, meetings, recertifications, and general shakedowns to make sure I am “up to date.” All these, of course, involve substantial fees. If you do not pay these fees you will be listed...

  • The world record snow goose and other stories

Chuck Stranahan, The Fly Fishing Journal|Nov 30, 2023

In a way I felt sorry for the guy and in another, thought he got what he deserved. The incident happened in a small café in Macdoel, California, a small town in northern California below the Oregon border, north of Mount Shasta, near the Tule Lake and Lower Klamath National Wildlife Preserves. At times it seems that every migratory waterfowl bird on the Pacific flyway would headquarter on the 90,000 acres of marshland on these preserves. On a series of crisp early winter mornings before first...
