  • Heads up Sewer District Phase 1 property owners

Colleen Krause - Summer resident, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jun 6, 2019

SEELEY LAKE - The “information” packet mailed to you by the sewer board was not particularly vetted. While the cover letter did have the term “Draft User Agreement” in it a number of times, the text did not make it clear that you should not sign the draft and send it back. They also failed to put the word “DRAFT” in large letters diagonally across the draft. This is just a draft and you SHOULD NOT sign it and send it back in. BEFORE any final User’s Agreement can go out to you, the Phase 1 people, you have a RIGHT to have input in the formation...

    Don Larson, Seeley Lake, Mont.|Jun 6, 2019

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Sewer Board has drawn up a draft “user agreement” for we sewer district residents. That’s the agreement between the board and we “customers” which must be in place before we receive sewer service. It is complicated, technical and full of legal jargon. We must understand it completely before we sign up. The board has called a meeting for 5:15 p.m., Thursday, June 6 at the Seeley Lake Elementary School. Sewer District residents should consider this important meeting a “must attend” event. We can ask questions and...

  • Individualism versus individuation

    Ken Silverstro PhD|Jun 6, 2019

The word individuation is not heard very often. On the other hand, individualism is commonly expressed in our culture. Many people consider the two words to have the same meaning but the two words are very different. Often people praise, envy or acknowledge individualism. Most people consider individualism to be associated with an accomplishment, an ability to meet life with confidence or achieving a personal level of satisfaction. These descriptions can apply but often individualism actually is...

  • Hardening, aphids & quackgrass

    Molly Hackett, Master Gardener|Jun 6, 2019

Q: What on earth does it mean to "harden" a plant? A: It is gardeners' slang for helping an indoor plant to adapt itself to outdoor weather. The same techniques are used for plants grown in a greenhouse or bought at a nursery. The leaf surfaces of plants are delicate if they have always been warm, have never felt wind, have never seen bright sun. Amazingly, plants can toughen their leaves to adjust to weather, but they cannot do so instantly. It is as if the plant grows itself a jacket, and the...

Matthew 7: 13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Where will your journey without end take you? A journey by the Spirit of Truth will lead a few to one day hear “Well done. Come inherit the Kingdom that was prepared for you.” Very unfortunately “the many” are led by the spirit of deception, (A blend of truth and false-hood) “Depart from me.” John 5:28-29 “Do not...

  • Rule of Thumb

    Betty Vanderwielen, Pathfinder|Jun 6, 2019

SEELEY LAKE – John, reading a financial magazine, might say to his wife Mary, "Honey, it says here as a rule of thumb, we should have an emergency fund set aside equal to six months' worth of household expenses. We don't even have an emergency fund, but we probably should be putting some money aside." If that was perceived by Mary as a prelude to an unwelcome conversation targeting those expensive new shoes she just bought, she might deflect by saying, "Well, a rule of thumb certainly isn't a...

  • UM geologist describes where the gold comes from

Rick and Susie Graetz, Unniverity of Montana Department of Geography|Jun 6, 2019

David Alt, author and a retired professor of geology at the University of Montana, explains why gold was found in Grasshopper Creek and the surrounding gulches. "At Bannack, as in many gold mining districts, much of the production came fast and early from bonanza deposits in stream placers. Early miners working the gravels in the streambed skimmed the cream off the district, leaving the hardest work and leanest pickings for those who came later. That happens because streams concentrate gold as...
