    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Nov 9, 2023

A Seeley Lake man was sentenced to five years in the Montana State Prison on Nov. 3 after he pleaded guilty to killing a Potomac woman while high on methamphetamine in a car crash last December. Kerry Glen Drew, 69, pleaded guilty to four felonies and one misdemeanor earlier this year as a part of a plea deal. He was driving westbound on Highway 200 on the night of Dec. 21 when he hit a group of cars parked on the side of the road near mile marker 18. The group of cars were attempting to pull a car out of a snowbank. Drew, who was intoxicated...

Claire Muller, Executive Director of Seeley Lake Community Foundation|Nov 9, 2023

I am so grateful for Loving Hearts Thrift Shoppe. I recently got the prettiest teal colored jacket there, and a pile of other great items, at the $1 bag sale! When I got home and realized my new favorite jacket was reversible, and even prettier on the inside, I SQUEALED with joy. I am a very proud cheapskate - a frugal warrior - and your store makes my heart happy. I love a good deal, I love reusing perfectly good clothing, and I love popping in to Loving Hearts every month or so to run into people and see what’s going on. So many people in t...

  • Clarifying the facts as I see them on the 95 mill property tax increase

Senator John Esp, Chairman Senate Finance Committee|Nov 9, 2023
    1

Recently opinion pieces and information sent to legislators regarding the counties decision to levy 77.9 mills instead of the State directed 95 mills has been circulating in both statewide newspapers, and internal legislative correspondence. It appears that the message being distributed is counties are giving large tax breaks to corporations and out of state homeowners while doing little for the average Montanan. While the numbers can be interpreted to support that message, and they (the numbers) are in fact accurate, they only tell part of...

  • Identified and prepared

    Ryan Dailey, Camp Utmost|Nov 9, 2023

In my last article I said I wanted to do a small series looking at the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10-18. Last time I wrote about the sword of the spirit and the shield of faith. This time I would like to take a look at the helmet of salvation and the shoes that Paul describes in this way: “your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” So what do these two pieces of armor look like historically and how do they help us understand the spiritual implications Paul is ad...

  • Preparing for the fly tying season

Chuck Stranahan, The Fly Fishing Journal|Nov 9, 2023

The past few snowy days have driven me indoors. And I'm at home here. I'm not house-bound, yet, but will be by the end of February. Until then there is plenty to do: on several sides I'm faced with an unending pile of clutter to be sorted out as it gets added to while deciding which of it to discard; there are abandoned manuscripts in the computer that need an infusion of interest; there are the musical instruments - guitars, a banjo and a mandolin – on their stands next to the computer s...

  • Street Cred in the Swan Valley

    Alan Muskett, of the Pathfinder|Nov 9, 2023

It happened like this: The guy is going 120 mph in a stolen car, running from the cops. Not surprisingly, being fabulously drunk, he misses a 90 degree turn, launching him and his vehicle (separately) into a low earth orbit, our protagonist being unrestrained. After a flight of around 100 feet, he was then restrained when he landed on a metal fence post, which entered his lower jaw and exited through the middle of his back. First responders cut the fence post off at the ground and found to their surprise that he was alive. Remarkably, they got...

Thirty-five years ago... Thursday, November 10, 1988 New Outdoors Program Hundreds of youth are exploring nature and firearm safety through new 4-H wildlife and shooting programs. There are wildlife programs in about half of Montana’s counties now according to Mike Cavey, Montana State University Extension Service project coordinator. They plan the programs in all of Montana’s counties as soon as there are enough volunteer leaders. As long as there is a group of 10 or more people, the project will go anywhere in the state to train them. The...

  • Firewood, slash & bugs: How to protect your personal forest & reduce wildfire risk

Kyle Carpenter, Clearwater Unit Service Forester for DNRC|Nov 9, 2023

While late fall through early winter brings pleasant temperatures to work outside, it can also contribute to insect issues the following year. If lodgepole or ponderosa pines are cut without time to thoroughly dry before the following June, pine engraver (Ips) beetle populations can build to levels that are hazardous to trees. Pine engraver populations can build up in both limbs of ponderosa pines discarded from logging operations as well as in smaller diameter stems cut for fuels reduction....
