Halloween goes down as spooky success

Senior Center Halloween Bash

The Seeley Lake Senior Center (Sela Senci) had a Halloween Bash on Tuesday, Oct. 31. They had a contest for the best costume. The winners were: 9th place, Jerry Posthunus, 8th place Eldon Barbieri, 7th place Rockey Kennedy, 6th Marlene Bartlett, 5th place Rachel Wilkinson, 4th place Barb Knopp, 3rd place Boyd Gossard, 2nd place Althea Garland, and 1st place went to Doug Richards.

After lunch a game of bingo was played. Everyone had a great day.

About 20 people came for the day. It would be great if more people would come and enjoy the fun. The Senior Center is located at 104 Locust Lane, Seeley Lake. They serve nutritious lunch meals every Monday - Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The meals are $7 for 60 and over and $10 for those under 60. There are activities that follow the lunch time. Everyone Welcome!

Halloween fun returns to Ovando

Jean Pocha of the Pathfinder

After a decade long respite from extensive Halloween activities, Ovando community members put together a town-wide extravaganza. In the past, a few parents put up a wildly popular haunted house in the Gym, but their kids grew up and activities changed.

"We don't know what we're doing," Melissa Lapka said. "But we're bringing Halloween back to Ovando."

This year Melissa Lapka and Krissi Hessler decided to host a spaghetti dinner featuring ghost bananas, bone breadsticks and spider cupcakes at the School Gym. Melissa organized games of Mummy Wrap, where teams of three chose a team member to wrap with a roll of toilet paper, Witches Hat ring toss, Corn Hole and Spooky Pong were other informal games.

"It was a success at the school and we're happy to see Halloween return to Ovando," Krissi Hessler said.

Fifteen kids and their parents played games in the gym. Kids kept going outside to see if it was 'dark enough' to go trick or treating. Finally it was 'time' and groups of kids and parents began walking around town with flashlights and a car escort.

Meanwhile 13 ghouls of all shapes and sizes were putting finishing touches on costumes and spooky touches on the first ever 'Halloween Forest' designed in the trees around Terry Shephard's office by the park in Ovando.

"We do this for us, because we like to set things up for the kids," Kathy Thurmond, organizer of Frivolous Affairs in Ovando, said.

Small groups of children and parents were escorted around the Forest by a Gypsy guide. Mommy Dearest, adult ghouls, a burlap faced cowboy and witches lurked under the trees, moderating their expression based on the ages of the children.

"It's fun to do something for the kids," Elaine Caton said. "Our kids enjoyed it when they were young and it's nice to help the next batch of kids."
