  • Seeley Fire Board purchases fire truck, found missing 81K

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

The Seeley Lake Rural Fire District Board held a special meeting last week to make two major purchases: a type one fire engine and three extraction tools - totaling $59,000. Despite not budgeting for either expense, Fire Chief Dave Lane said the district has the money for the purchases because of previous budget errors that left more taxpayer money with the department than previously thought. The board approved both purchases unanimously, with trustee Susan Monahan absent because of an illness....

  • 'Biggest little rodeo' hosted for 59th year

    Jean Pocha, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

The whispers of "Heads up, something special is going to happen at the beginning of the rodeo," floated around the grandstands, building suspense for the opening of the 59th Helmville Rodeo. Following the presentation of the Montana and Armed Forces flags, Bonnie Weaver, rodeo club secretary and Bill Baker, Rodeo Club president carried the American Flag to the center of the freshly groomed arena. Lily Boyd, a Seeley-Swan High School student from Condon climbed onto a barrel and prepared to...

  • Project could thin stands from Seeley to Alva

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

A new request from Lolo National Forest would open roughly 22,000 acres of federal land to commercial timber harvesting, fuels reduction and road decommissioning, with the main goal of clearing dead and infected trees to prevent wildfires and beetle kill. Similar projects have been completed on the west side of Highway 83. While parts of the treated forest burned during the Colt Fire, Seeley Lake District Ranger Quinn Carver attested that the active management stunted the fire and kept it from...

  • Next legislative session's work begins now

Sen. Jason Ellsworth, Montana Senate President|Sep 14, 2023

It’s fairly common knowledge that Montana’s legislative branch of government is a citizen legislature that only meets in session for 90 business days every two years. While true, those facts often lead to misconceptions about the real nature of legislators’ work. In reality, the Legislature works year round. Being an effective legislator is much closer to full-time public service than a part-time job. Constituents regularly contact their elected representatives looking for assistance, asking about various laws, and pitching their ideas for f...

  • Democracy Means Listening to People

Sen. Pat Flowers. Rep. Mary Caferro|Sep 14, 2023

Democracy is about listening to people. To hear from Montanans, state Democrats this summer and fall are traveling across the state, holding well-publicized, public meetings to receive input directly from citizens about how their government can better serve them and help create opportunity for their families and businesses. Montanans deserve the chance to meet their citizen legislators face-to-face to discuss issues important to them, their families, and their communities. Our state has a long, important tradition of elected officials meeting w...

  • Psychological Perspectives: Mind and Body – A Unity?

    Ken Silvestro|Sep 14, 2023

We know we possess a body. That’s obvious. All we need to do is look in a mirror or at a part of our body, like an arm, to realize this. We also know we have a mind, which, again, is obvious since we have thoughts, make decisions, are willful, and so forth. One of the great mysteries throughout all of time, however, is how mind and body interact? One theory is a unity of mind and body. If there is a unity, then there really isn’t a separate mind and body. We know the two must connect simply bec...

  • Do I need to be baptized?

    Mark Taylor, Layman|Sep 14, 2023

As references I will be using the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church as resource material. What did Jesus say? Jesus said, “I solemnly assure you, no one can enter into Gods kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit” (John 3:5). At the ascension, Jesus said, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). Jesus commanded the apostles, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. T...

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

The Seeley-Swan Volleyball Team enjoyed a 3-0 set victory over Lincoln on Sept. 6, dominating the play in front of a loud home crowd. Blackhawks Volleyball entered the game 1-2, with all three games going on the road. The Lincoln game was originally scheduled Aug. 31, but an illness with the team caused both sides to reschedule. "We were transitioning, we were talking, we just had energy," head coach Janelle Greenwood said. The team is starting fresh this year, as no starters returned from last...

  • Football taken down by Manhattan Christian on road

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

Seeley Swan Blackhawks Football went 1-1 on the road the last two weeks, first beating Powell County High School before losing to Manhattan Christian the last week. The Blackhawks took on Manhattan Christian in football last Friday. This year was the first that the Manhattan school fielded a football team, which lost to Lone Peak High School to start the season. But after beating Cascade High School the next week, Manhattan Christian looked more dangerous than a first-year team might seem. The...

  • In pursuit of little bugs – and the trout that eat them

    Chuck Stranahan, The Flyfishing Journal|Sep 14, 2023

Fly fishers are a curious lot: They'll leave home and drive halfway across the state or into another, burning up two tanks of gas at today's prices to haul hundreds if not thousands of dollars' worth of gear with them to use for a few hours when they arrive. They do this because they heard rumors of a flurry of harmless bugs flying over the water somewhere else. Here in Montana that's considered normal behavior. This time of year we see lots of little bugs, some medium-sized ones, and a few big...

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

The Missoula County Commissioners approved a new budget for next year, focusing on increasing funds for public safety and keeping the increase within the margins of recent high inflation. The commissioners also approved an increase for the Seeley Refuse District, increasing annual prices for district ratepayers from $180 to $200. Out of district fees also increased. For a person living outside of Missoula City limits, county taxes will be approximately $314 for every 100,000 in value of the home, not including local mills like the Seeley Lake...

  • How to tell if your trees are healthy

Sandy Perrin, Missoula County Extension Office|Sep 14, 2023

In the fall people worry that their pine, spruce, cedar (conifer) trees are diseased or infested with insects. The symptoms that are described on their trees include yellowing and dropping of older needles. In fact, most callers stress that only the tips of branches are still green, while on the insides of branches, needles are browning and dropping to the ground. Fortunately, what they are seeing are not disease or insect pests. The good news is that fall drop of older needles is normal. Pines...

  • Archives for Sept. 14

    Sep 14, 2023

Twenty Years Ago Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 Elk on public land merit special attention By Mike Thompson Upon entering Trixi's Antler Saloon, in Ovando, Montana, you stand at a crossroads between elk populations and in the eye of a storm in elk management. No one knows for sure how elk sort themselves into "herd units," as wildlife biologists refer to them. They are defined by distinct winter ranges, in this case the Blackfoot-Clearwater Game Range to the northwest and the eastern slopes of the...

  • Forest Service to conduct prescribed burn near Seeley

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Sep 14, 2023

The Forest Service plans to use prescribed burns on a couple units across the district, with one coming as soon as Sept. 17. Seeley Lake District Ranger Quinn Carver said in an email that the district is looking to burn about 135 acres in the Horseshoe Hills area north of Big Sky Lake. Carver said smoke will be visible from the site and likely pass through Ovando before dispersing in the Upper Blackfoot Valley. "I don't want folks to be alarmed when they see smoke," Carver said. "The stuff in...
