SLE's seventh grade 4X400m relay team (L-R): Stephan Jorgensen, Sawyer Shelmerdine, Owen Mercado and Will Batchelder. They took third with a time of 4:38.31.
SLE seventh grader Beau Sloan took fourth in the discus with a throw of 83 feet, 6 inches.
Sixth-grade Eagle Hannah Ayers finished first in the 1600m with a time of 6:06. Her nearest competition was 10 seconds behind her at the finish.
SLE seventh grader Jordan Johnson took second in the shot put with a throw of 25 feet, 10.5 inches.
Swan Valley's Aspen Conley took fourth in the triple jump for the seventh graders, 25 feet, 4 inches.
MISSOULA - The top five athletes from the Missoula County Public Schools and schools from the Copper League competed against each other at the Meet of Champions, May 19 at Big Sky Stadium.
Potomac School sent 11 athletes. Three athletes from Swan Valley School (SVE) and one thrower from Salmon Prairie School joined with Seeley Lake Elementary's (SLE) 24 individual athletes and relay teams for the meet to end their season.
Potomac Pioneers
Potomac head coach Amy Vann is very proud of the track team, "I am also thankful for our supportive community and volunteer coaches."
Coach Vann said it was a season full of personal bests. "Our kids have heart and if I had to describe coaching this season in one word, it would be 'blessed'," said Coach Vann.
At the Meet of Champions eighth-grader Michaela Ailport took first place for the Pioneers in the javelin with a throw of 77 feet, 10 inches. Ailport also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 63 feet, 9 inches.
Also in the top five for the girls was Hailey Oien in the discus throwing 55 feet, 3 inches, the 100m dash, 14.93 and the 200m, 31.35. Maggie Vann finished the 1600m in fourth place with a time of 6:25.23.
For the boys Garrett Schmill earned his way into the top five with his discus throw of 58 feet, 4 inches and his javelin throw of 64 feet, 5 inches.
"I know that I was very impressed with the growth in each athlete and the willingness they had to try new events. It was a fun season for me," said Beth Copenhaver, hurdles and high jump coach.

SLE Eagles
"It was a great season by our athletes. Our kids were improving and getting better. We had some outstanding performances at the Meet of Champions," said SLE Head Coach Brett Haines.
Haines said that SLE covered everything from hurdling, running, jumping and the field events. "From the 400m on up we were outstanding."
Seventh-grader Klaire Kovatch won the long jump with a jump of 13 feet, 2 inches.
Eighth-grader Terra Bertsch won the high jump for the second year in a row with a jump of 4 feet, 8 inches.
The eighth grade boys 4X400m relay team won the Meet of Champions and set a school record for the third year in a row with a time of 4:01.11, 0.77 seconds faster than last year's time.
Sixth-grader Chase Haines took first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.61.
Seventh-graders Jordan Johnson and Beau Sloan took first in the javelin. Johnson threw 83 feet, 1 inch and Sloan won with a throw of 116 feet, 6 inches.
Coach Haines said sixth grader Hannah Ayers had a leg injury and hadn't trained for the last two week. She ran a 6:06 mile, 10 seconds faster than second place and the third best time for the whole meet across all ages.
Sixth grader Sariah Maughan took first in the 800m run with a time of 2:43.14, the fastest time for all the girls in the 800m at the Meet of Champions.
"We are real excited about the season and the outcome," said Coach Haines. "Anytime our athletes can place in the top five that's pretty good. That's exceptional when our kids can win. We had a great season and I'm really proud of them."
