District track and field was hotter, slower and smaller for the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks last weekend.
The athletes competed against the six other teams in their district on Saturday, when temperatures in Missoula were in the high seventies. The heat caused the Blackhawks to clock in slower times than normal, Coach Mike Haines said.
This weekend, the Blackhawks will head back to Missoula to compete in Divisionals, where the field expands in size. All the Western Class C teams will compete, which is about 25 teams, Haines said. Haines said the goal for this meet is to get as many students qualified for State as possible. Only a handful of Blackhawks on the track and field team this year have had State experience, he said.
At State, the Blackhawks can expect to compete against around 90 teams, Haines said. One State tournament a few years ago brought out 5,000 people to watch.
"What other sport do you get to compete in front of that many people? That's a pretty good deal," Haines said. "If they make it to state, they've done something pretty good," he continued.
