Photo: Artist Jim L. Rogers poses with his sculpture of a mama black bear with her cub. Rogers was in Seeley Lake last weekend demonstrating his wood carving techniques (he uses a chainsaw to “rough out” his large all-in-one wood creations, and finished the details with fine woodworking tools). He is the nephew of Dan and Daisy Cainan, Seeley lake. Hundreds of visitors stopped to admire this mama bear. Youngsters, especially, enjoy the large sculptures. Jim’s wife Bonnie recalled a recent incident during an outdoor show-one youngster came by and hugged and kissed every one of the bears! “We’ve had people come up and talk to them. We’ve had drunks talk to them,” Jim Rogers laughed. He carves his creations from dead, standing timber. Some of them weigh over 500 pounds. He created the “cigar store Indian” on display at The Stage Station in Seeley Lake and has done commission work for well-known people such as country music singer Barbara Mandrell, and Dr Bruce Vorhuer, Salmon Lake.

Perfect race conditions for inaugural Race for a Place - Celebrate the Swan

The inaugural “Race for a Place” was run under sunny skies and near perfect race conditions. Enough shade protected runners from too much sunshine while water stations at strategic points refreshed parched throats and overheated heads.

Most runners reported the course challenging in some respects while forgiving in others and scenic throughout. Due to the positive response to the races and to the games for kids that followed, race organizers plan to hold the event next year on the last Saturday in June.

The Swan Ecosystem Center wishes to thank all the runners and walkers who participated on June 28 the race organizers five special thanks to the race sponsors.

The overall winners: Mens-5K Robin Hamilton, Missoula. Womens-5K, Caitlin Stone, Condon. Mens-10K Joshua Kendrick, Missoula. Womens-10K Mara Veale, Missoula.
