Lady Blackhawks shutout Tigers and Trojans

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks made quick work of the Darby Tigers and the Drummond Trojans this last week. The Lady Blackhawks beat both in three sets.

Taking the court at home Sept. 17, the Lady Blackhawks showed their support for the Cahoon family with #CahoonStrong written on their warmups and on posters on the wall.

"The SSHS volleyball and all of our teams and players are very deeply saddened by Wayne's death. Wayne's family has supported us all though the years," wrote sophomore Dani Sexton in an email. "The Cahoons are OUR Family. We will do anything for Family."

Sexton added Wayne was the players' "supporter, advise giver, mentor... and we knew he loved us. He was just like a granpa to us. We wanted to recognize Wayne and family and support them now as Christian is in hospital."

The Lady Blackhawks played their hearts out and shut Darby down in three sets, 25-8, 25-18 and 25-9. Senior Klaire Kovatch led at the net with 12 kills with sophomore Kyla Conley putting down 8 kills. Senior Jordan Johnson was instrumental with 17 assists. Kovatch, Sexton and Sariah Maughan each had three aces. Trista Wendel made the only two blocks for the night.

"We got our serves over, which we have been working on a lot in practice. We were a lot better at coverage and our blocks were up and good, our hits were on," said Sexton after the game. "We did really good tonight and hustled a lot."

Sexton said she felt the team helped bring themselves up. She said the shutout showed improvement since Darby took Granite to five games, a team they lost to early in the season.

Prior to the varsity game, the junior varsity maintained their undefeated season. While Darby won the first set by five points, the Ladies never looked back taking the next three for the game. Madison Debernardi led with 8 aces and 6 kills. Along with 4 aces and 4 kills, Mara Beckstrom put up the most assists with 8.

On the road Sept. 19, the Lady Blackhawks kept the momentum going. While the sets were close, the Blackhawks caged the Trojans in three, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23.

Kovatch led again at the net making 13 kills and made the most digs with four. Johnson and Aspen Conley led the assists with 10 and 9 respectively. Johnson and Maughan made the most aces with two each.

This week the Lady Blackhawks head to Hot Springs Sept. 24 with the junior varsity starting at 4:30 p.m. Check the Seeley-Swan High School Activities Facebook page for updates and live streaming of games.
