Lady Blackhawks fall at State

MISSOULA – The Lady Blackhawks bowed out of the State C Basketball Tournament after falling to Melstone in their opening game March 12 and Scobey the next day.

Both the Lady Blackhawks and Melstone spent the first quarter testing each other's defense looking for a way to break through. The defense was winning with the score just 4-4 after the first quarter.

The Lady Blackhawks finally found their groove at the start of the second quarter putting up 10 unanswered points but Melstone fought back to 15-9 by the half. Neither team shot well in the first half though the Lady Blackhawks were significantly better hitting 26.6% compared to Melstone's 17.4%.

Both teams shot better in the third quarter with the Lady Blackhawks hitting 45.5% and Melstone shooting 38.5%. While the Lady Blackhawks were more accurate, Melstone's Koye Rindal started nailing three-pointers and closed the gap in the score.

The Lady Blackhawks held just a two-point lead going into the final frame but would soon find themselves trailing. Once ahead, Melstone switched tactics, slowing down the pace and burning off the clock.

The Lady Blackhawks were shutout in the final quarter and fell 26-34.

Klaire Kovatch and Terra Bertsch led the Lady Blackhawks with 8 points each. Bertsch had the Ladies only 2 three-pointers. Also scoring: Aspen Conley 4, Kara Good 2, Sariah Maughan 2, Bethany Hoag 1 and Emily Maughan 1.

Lady Blackhawks: 4, 11, 11, 0 - 26

Melstone: 4, 5, 15, 10 - 34

The loss to Melstone put the Lady Blackhawks into the consolation bracket where they faced Scobey on Friday.

The Lady Blackhawks fell behind Scobey early hitting just one basket for 3 points while allowing Scobey to sink 3 three-pointers in the first quarter. The Lady Blackhawks stopped Scobey's three-point game but were unable to make up any ground. They were trailing by 9 at the half.

In the second half the Lady Blackhawks hung with Scobey fairly well but couldn't close the gap. The final score was 28-40.

Sariah and Kovatch led the Lady Blackhawks with 9 points each. Sariah shot 4 of 6 from the free-throw line while Kovatch hit 2 of 3. Both Ladies had three-pointers along with Emily and Kyla Conley.

Lady Blackhawks: 3, 10, 10, 5 - 28

Scobey: 9, 13, 12, 6 - 40

The state tournament was cut short due to fears over spreading the COVID-19 virus after four Montana residents had presumptive positive test results for the virus. This left four teams hanging in the consolation bracket and the two teams that were to play the championship. Belt and Roy-Winifred were named 2020 co-champions.

Congratulations Lady Blackhawks on a great season!
