The power of a wish

SWAN VALLEY – When Beauty Lou (Lilly Boyd) "wished upon a wishbone" to turn the man who won first place at the county fair for his beautiful roses into a beast, her wish was granted. It wasn't until years later that she realized the power of her wish and the beast (Jalen Kauffman) understood that his pride in his looks, wealth and roses had kept him away from things much more important, like friendship.

Missoula Children's Theatre and Swan Valley School students presented "Beauty Lou and the Country Beast" Friday, March 6. The musical took a country western spin on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

Throughout the story, the audience was introduced to Beauty Lou, the youngest of seven girls, her mother Buckaroo Bonnie, six sisters, her imaginary friend, farmhands Slim and Dusty and the neighborly country folk and barnyard critters. After the threat of losing the family farm, Beauty Lou agrees to befriend the miner-turned-beast to save her family. The beast provides every material thing Beauty Lou could ask for while staying with him. When she asks him for the one thing she is missing, to be her friend, he said he doesn't deserve friendship.

However after Beauty Lou begins working alongside him tending the roses, working in the mine and helping with chores, she finds the friendship she has been looking for. She and the Beast both learn to look beyond appearances and first impressions to see the beauty inside.

When Beauty Lou returns home for a visit, her mother reminds her that she wished the man with the roses become a beast because he was so mean and spiteful. Beauty Lou "wishes upon a wishbone" to transform the man back to who he was before. When she returns, the beast has transformed into her imaginary friend (Cadence Mauldin), something she did not expect.
