Tigers and Pirates fall to Seeley-Swan

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks defeated two conference teams last week starting with the Darby Tigers at home Jan. 17 and then the Victor Pirates on the road Jan. 18.

The Boys took a commanding lead over the Tigers in the second quarter scoring 26 to the Tigers' 10 and they never looked back. Even the Tigers stellar free throw shooting, hitting 18 of 20, couldn't close the gap and the Blackhawks won, 65-43.

Quinlan Ream led the Boys scoring 24 points including 15 in the second quarter. He hit 4 three-pointers, 4 two-pointers and went 2 of 3 from the free throw line.

Owen Mercado also scored into the double digits with 18 including hitting 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Dakota Wood added 9 while Sawyer Shelmerdine scored 7, Chase Haines scored 5 and Walker McDonald scored 2.

The Victor Pirates offered little competition for the Blackhawks as they easily overcame them, scoring more points in the opening minutes than the Pirates did throughout the game. The final score was 65-14.

Mercado led the Blackhawks against the Pirates with 24 points off 11 baskets and a pair of free throws.

Shelmerdine scored 14 points while Ream was dialed in from the three-point range again hitting all four of the Blackhawks three pointers for 12 points. McDonald added 7 points while Brayden Rodriguez had 6 and Wood scored 2.

Darby: 11, 10, 9, 13 - 43

Blackhawks: 24, 20, 16, 5 - 65

Victor: 2, 7, 1, 4 - 14

The Lady Blackhawks and Tigers battled early in the game with the Tigers taking the first frame. The Lady Blackhawks shut them down in the second quarter allowing just one basket and steadily pulled ahead to a 39-25 victory.

Klaire Kovatch led the Lady Blackhawks with 12 points followed by Terra Bertsch with 10. Kara Good scored 5 including a three pointer while Taylor Dillree and Aspen Conley had the team's other three pointers. Bethany Hoag had a pair of baskets for 4 points and Kyla Conley added 2.

In Victor the Lady Blackhawks decimated the Pirates. It was no contest as the Lady Blackhawks allowed the Pirates just three baskets. The final score was 65-6.

Kovatch and Sariah Maughan both scored into the double digits with 13 and 12 respectively. Both did well from the free throw line with Maughan hitting 4 of 4 and Kovatch hitting 5 of 6.

The team hit six three-pointers. Maughan and Aspen each hit two while Rose Mercer and Dani Sexton each hit one.

Also scoring: Mercer 8, Sexton 7, Bertsch 6, Aspen 6, Bethany Hoag 6, Hannah Ayers 4, Good 3 and Kinley Moore 2.

Lady Blackhawks: 8, 10, 10, 11 - 39

Darby: 11, 2, 7, 5 - 25

Lady Blackhawks: 24, 22, 12, 7 - 65

Victor: 2, 0, 0, 4 - 6

The Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks head out on the road for both games next week taking on Valley Christian Jan. 24 with JV Girls starting at 2:30 p.m. and then Philipsburg Jan. 25 with JV girls starting at 3 p.m.
