The trail awaits

Out 'N The Woods Again

Won't be long now many will be look'n to head on down some trail. There's noth'n quite like it - horses and mules and good company.

Many moons ago Will Kats and Paul Ossowski and I headed for the Chinese Wall. From Owl Creek to the Pendent and then down the Holbrook to Murphy's Flats.

Anyway, while rid'n down the Holbrook, Paul was rid'n the mustang Shadow I'd sold him. This here horse would stop at a mud hole and try and drink. Seems like where he came from in Wyoming, he never saw a real creek. Most horses there die from sand colic.

This wild horse was something. For a while he'd try and bite ya or strike ya. I don't remember him try'n to kick though. If you let him have his head, not even a Tennessee walked could match his gait.

Meanwhile about then a hound dog showed up. Not a soul in sight. So the mutt just trailed along behind us. We camped across from White River. Good fish'n.

A couple of days later we rode up to the wall. Impressive!! There's a picture of me with the hound. This was the first part of September. Cold up there, but it was worth it to see that hunk of rock.

Back at the campsite, we had a few great days and nights around the campfire. Will could say we were gathered at the South Fork College. Will tried to get me straight on adverbs and pronouns, he savvied that stuff. I just couldn't figure why I'd need them, they are words in a story. Couldn't decipher em' anyway. Then one day some of Cheff's boys showed up and wanted their hound back. Seems like they keep it around their camp to warn them if they be any bears about. The mutt got ahead of them and latched onto us.

We left, went down the river to Salmon Forks on up Salmon Lake to the inlet. Made camp in the rain. Reminded me of the winter John Hulett trapped in there and was ice fish'n on the lake. That's a story by itself.

The trail out changed to snow on Pendent Pass.
