Lady Blackhawks' season ends at Divisionals

CHURCHILL, MONT. - The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks played their final matches of the season at the Western C Divisional last week. The Ladies fell to Gardiner in their opening match and were eliminated by Charlo in the next match. Their season overall record was 19-7.

Manhattan Christian won The Western C Divisional with Ennis in second and Gardiner finishing third.

Despite the quick departure from the tournament, Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Tammy Lewis said the team was happy to have had the chance to compete. The trip gave some of the younger players the opportunity to get some experience in divisional level volleyball.

Lewis said the match against Gardiner was a rough one though the Ladies had some success in the second game and even had it tied up at times. The Lady Blackhawks fell in three games 12-25, 18-25 and 13-25.

Klaire Kovatch led the Lady Blackhawks with 7 blocks, 1 stuff block, the team’s only ace and 4 kills. Sariah Maughan also scored 4 kills while Ashley Miller led with 13 digs and Autumn Morse and 9 of the team’s 15 assists.

Charlo had given the Lady Blackhawks their first loss of the season in three games more than two months ago and Charlo gave the Ladies their final loss of the season. The Lady Blackhawks went down fighting in their final loss with three tight games 23-25, 24-26 and 21-25.

Miller and Morse led the Lady Blackhawks’ defense with 16 digs each while Bethany Hoag led with 7 blocks and Kovatch with 5 stuff blocks. Morse had 16 of the team’s 24 assists and Miller had 12 kills. Kovatch again had the team’s lone ace.

In the season stats the Lady Blackhawks played 87 sets with Miller, Morse, Kovatch and Emma Stevenson playing in all 87.

Morse led the team in aces with 54 followed by 52 from Taylor Dillree and Stevenson with 50.

Morse had 366 assists of the team’s 523 while Kovatch was the lead hitter with 221 kills.

Though Kovatch led in number of kills, Chloe Robbins whose season ended after only 10 sets due to injury led in kill percentage scoring 17 of 54 attempted kills or 31.5 percent. Kovatch’s kill success rate was 29.9 percent.

On the defense, Miller, Morse and Madison Hinchey all returned over 100 serves each. Kovatch dominated the stats in blocking with 163 of the team’s 229 total blocks. Morse had 306 digs in the season with Miller close behind with 287.

Lewis said she was very proud of the team and what they were able to accomplish this season. She said the departing seniors will be leaving a big hole in the team and will be missed but a great group of young players are ready to carry on the Lady Blackhawks volleyball tradition.
