Blackhawks Win Three Titles at State Track

LAUREL - The Seeley-Swan High School boys continued their season-long dominance in the 4x400 meter relay at the state meet Saturday, May 27. The Blackhawks finished in a season best time of 3:32.84, just shy of a school record but two seconds ahead of second place Charlo.

"They ran pretty well," said Coach Mike Haines. "They were favored going in and they handled that pressure."

Three boys scored points in individual events as well. Sophomore Hunter Shelmerdine ran a personal record (PR) in the 400, finishing sixth in 53.04.

The duo of Logan Maughan and Mitch Parcell went second and fourth in the 800-meter after hurdling a competitor who tripped in the final few meters. Both ran under 2:01, PRs by more than two seconds.

There were two individual titles on the girl's side, senior Cera Strumpfer in the pole vault and senior Alex Bohlman in the javelin.

It was a bittersweet ending for Bohlman, who competed in six events over the two-day meet. Bohlman also scored in the 100 meter (sixth), the 200 meter (third), and helped the Seeley-Swan 400 meter and 1600 meter relays to sixth and fourth place finishes.

"Alex got a little worn down by the end of the season there," said Haines. "She still competed hard and gave her best effort."

Both teams were looking to get on the podium but came up short. The boys finished seventh overall and the girls a close fourth.

Next year the boys will return all but one athlete and should be competitive at the state level. The girls' team will be strong but won't challenge for a state title after losing its two individual champions to graduation.

"It was very successful," said Haines looking back at the season. "We came a whisker away from winning districts and divisionals with the boys and the girls. Very good season."
