Warhawks Split Against Hall

SWAN VALLEY - The Swan Valley Elementary School (SVES) War Hawk basketball teams opened their season against the Hall Huskies Saturday, Jan. 7. The "A" squad had a comfortable win against Hall (54-32) and it was a close loss (16-24) for the "B" squad.

The "B" squad had a tough time finding the shooting range the first half and trailed 4 to 16 at half time. The team from Hall took advantage of the younger players playing for the first time during the first half, but the Warhawks worked very hard to play better defense and take better shots where they outscored the Huskies 12 to 8 for a final score of 16 to 24.

Chris Auchenbach led the War Hawks with 6 points followed by Trista Alexander with 4 and Levi Webb, Aubrey Matthew and Lilly Boyd all with 2.

The War Hawk "A" team came out with a hot hand and scored the first 4 baskets taken within the first minute. Using a very tight, hustling defense, they held the Hall Huskies to 4 points the first quarter compared to their 20. Quick, crisp passing led to several lay-ups and some good outside shooting paid off as well.

On the defensive end of the game, a scrappy team effort held the Huskies in check.

Rose Mercer led the War Hawks in scoring with 18 points with Connor Matthew tallying 11, Nick Bedson had 8, Kyla Conley and Seth Richardson each scoring 6 and Aspen Conley scoring 5.

Coaches Ken Donovan, Chris Achenbach and John Tapp were pleased with the effort and hustle shown by everyone and feel the team will be competitive within the league this year.
