Eagles Football Season Off and Running

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Elementary school flag football season started Sept. 13 with a rough game against Superior. After focusing on their defense, the team is getting better with every practice. Head Coach Brett Haines is optimistic and is looking forward to how the team will do when they meet Superior again this week.

There are 32 players in fifth through eighth grade this year. There are six eighth-graders. Haines said he has good leadership from eighth grade quarterback Owen Mercado. Haines also highlighted the strength eighth-grader Beau Sloan adds to the defensive line.

The majority of the players are in sixth grade. Haines said there are some good athletes in the sixth grade class and feels the team will be even stronger next year with that class having another year under their belt.

Of their first game against SuperiorHaines said, "We didn't have a chance to work on our defense like I would have liked. We were a little slow on our defensive end."

The Eagles gave up 38 points while only scoring 14 on their home field.

The team travelled to Hellgate Middle School and played in the Flag Football Jamboree Sept. 15. They swept DeSmet and beat Phillipsburg in a tight matchup.

The Eagles had the home field advantage Tuesday, Sept. 20 when playing the Hellgate Hawks. Quarterback Owen Mercado put the first points on the board early in the second quarter making the touch down and the two-point conversion. The Eagles kept the Hawks from scoring ending the half 8-0.

Halfway through the third quarter, the Hawks made a touchdown. Eagle Klayton Kovatch answered it early in the fourth quarter. Bridger McDonald caught a 10-yard pass to seal the win for the Eagles, 20-6.

They had another home game against Lone Rock Wednesday, Sept. 21 and only allowed them 8 points.

"I've been pretty pleased with our defense in the last few games," said Haines. "We are hoping to shut Superior down some and we would like to beat them. We are going to have play well and limit those mental mistakes but I think we can do it."

Haines said he is excited about the football season and enjoying working with the athletes again.
