Nicholas Claims Gold; Blackhawks Take Silver at State

HAMILTON – Monday, May 16, the Seeley-Swan Golf team travelled to Hamilton for the 2016 State meet. It was their last round of golf for the season. Six Blackhawks qualified and competed in the two-day match, four boys and two girls.

Junior Jessie Hood shot a 107 on day one and 111 on day two for a total of 218. This gave her the 15th place medal. Serena Loney shot a 145 on day one, but was unable to compete on day two.

Seniors Joshua Cahoon and Jacob Haley, and Juniors McKinley Nicholas and Shane Lindemer made up the Blackhawk team who would play for the State title. The boys put together a combined team total of 529, to take second place at State.

Haley shot an 89 and a 98, which gave him a total of 187 for the meet. Lindemer hit a 92 then a 94 and finished with a 186. Cahoon started off with a 96 on day one, but came back with an 88 on day two, which gave him a 184.

Nicholas opened with an 85 which put him in fifth place after day one. He came back day two with an 81 ending the meet with a 166 total.

Adding to the winning of the silver medal was the news that Junior McKinley Nicholas was in a three-way tie for the individual gold. Numerous players, fans and coaches gathered at the end of the nine holes to watch.

When the boys finished the hole, there was another tie and Nicholas and Andrew Eberling of Plentywood played the hole again. And again, it ended in a tie.

The two then played off at the eighth hole. Both boys hit well to start the hole, but Nicholas took over and dropped the putt, making him the 2016 Class C State Champion.
