  • Blackfoot Challenge Block Party draws a crowd

    Jean Pocha, of the Pathfinder|Aug 17, 2023

Country music, a dunk tank and food trucks drew a crowd of almost 300 to the Blackfoot Challenge's block party Aug. 11 in downtown Ovando. Seth Wilson, executive director, welcomed everyone to the celebration of 30 years of partnerships, friendships and conservation. The Blackfoot Challenge was formed in 1993 following conservation efforts from the 1970s to build partnerships with public agencies. Early on, participants focused on working together to accomplish public access goals. In the '70s...

  • Hurricane moisture could reach Colt Fire, campground closures lifted

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Aug 17, 2023

Despite near-record breaking temperatures in the Seeley-Swan Valley, any growth on the Colt Fire has been stifled over the last few days and little activity is expected as cooler temperatures come into the region. The Colt Fire sat at 7,154 acres as of Aug. 19, a decrease of about 50 acres from earlier estimates in the week. Containment has shored up to 51%, with hand line and heavy machine line around most of the fire. Fire crews have continued to mop up areas where there is residual heat....

  • For Greg:

    Mike Marshall, Seeley Lake|Aug 17, 2023

This is a huge shell game by Gianforte and the Republicans in Montana 1. Greg implies it is the fault of local governments that taxes are increasing. Yet Montana Republicans refuse to give local governments meaningful ways to increase revenue in the face of increasing costs other than through increasing our property tax. Of course taxes will continue to rise. 2. Greg states in this odoriferous letter that his rebate will ‘almost completely offset what residential taxpayers will pay over the next two years.’ There’s no way that the pitta...

  • Grizzly kill permits put ranchers above all others on public lands

    Nick Gevock, Sierra Club, Helena|Aug 17, 2023

Montanans have worked for decades to restore our state animal, the grizzly bear. We’ve come a long way in recovering grizzlies in their core habitats, the Northern Continental Divide and Greater Yellowstone ecosystems, and beyond. That’s happened because of hard work by landowners, conservationists, hunters, state and federal wildlife officials, tribal interests and many more. That’s why it’s so unfortunate that our state legislature passed a bill this year allowing ranchers to kill grizzly bears on our public lands, just for being there....

  • Save the BCSA

Addrien Marx, Former owner of Roveros|Aug 17, 2023

Standing proudly at the corner of Highway 83 and Highway 200, appearing fresh and healthy, a newly painted “Big Cow” stands to greet those traveling past. Behind the bull’s unique and unforgettable stiffness lie softly rising hills that attract the eyes of most travelers. Still farther beyond these hills, on high snowy mountain peaks, are melting cold crystal water drops that form the headwaters of the iconic Blackfoot River. As the runoff moves down the mountains, the melting snow moves through the lush agricultural lands and wetlands of th...

  • Dental Health for a healthy life

    Heather Myre, Dental Hygenist|Aug 17, 2023

My last article discussed some dietary and nutritional pointers to help ensure a developing baby’s teeth have all the needed nutrients so they can develop correctly. I felt it was only appropriate to address some pointers for a mother while she is pregnant! As a standard in the dental world, we always suggest visiting your dentist and hygienist before becoming pregnant to rid the mouth of tartar build up, receive home care recommendations, and to address and hopefully treat any cavities or infections. At the very least, visit a dentist as s...

  • Almighty God will have the final say

    Dale Terillion, Christian Logger|Aug 17, 2023

One only has to read a paper or listen to the evening news to see what events are taking place. It’s getting pretty wild out there. Morally America is bleeding and sinking into depravity. Psalm 12:8 says, “the wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.” And of course the climate is changing. Everything is blamed on climate change. Some people think man can control the climate by doing away with fossil fuels. I think I will go with Him who created the climate in the first place. Men will never control disasters, acts of Go...

    Aug 17, 2023

Twenty Years Ago... Thursday, August 14, 2003 Wildlife well adapted to Montana Firestorms By Mike Thompson Hi, I'm NOT Johnny Cash, but we who live in Missoula are in a ring of fire this week. I've already fielded several questions from folks wondering how wildlife survives these live events. So, before you become weary of reading about fires this season, I thought I would offer a little information on the subject from the scientific literature. Back in 1988, when the Canyon Creek fire was...

  • Containment lines done for Colt Fire, record breaking heat comes to western Montana

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Aug 17, 2023

Fire crews across western Montana saw minimal fire growth last week, but August will roar to life this week with record-setting temperatures across the Rocky Mountains. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the Seeley Swan Valley from 11 a.m. Aug. 15 to 11 a.m. Aug 17. Temperatures in Seeley Lake are expected to be 95 degrees on Aug. 16 and 94 degrees on Aug. 17 - both on track to beat records set in 2003 and 1967, respectively. With the hot weather, fire conditions will...

  • Swan Valley Elementary approves new budget, principal hired

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Aug 17, 2023

The Swan Valley Elementary School Board voted unanimously to approve its school budget for the 2023-2024 school year on Aug 8. With higher taxes on the area, Business Manager Heather Mincey said school taxes will be spread across more people. The general fund stands at $435,576, compared to $402,435 last year. Most of the increase came in the technology sector, which has grown with the need for computers. The total budget stands at $667,164.46. Other funds, like the building reserve, have also increased with help from state grants and...

  • Traffic woes

Kapp Johnson, Secretary of Double Arrow Landowners Association|Aug 17, 2023

One does not need to live in a bustling urban area like Los Angeles to experience disruptive traffic these days. The work on Highway 83 at Salmon Lake, while anticipated, is changing the way we drive. Having lived in Los Angeles for 43 years, I had forgotten what normal traffic was like when I left the Treasure State at 23. My return “home” and negotiating Reserve Street in Missoula made me experience “déjà vu” all over again. My lifeline was not living in Missoula but returning to the “traffic free” confines of Seeley Lake. But I must admit...

  • New history shown at old Double Arrow ski hill

    Griffen Smith, of the Pathfinder|Aug 17, 2023

Almost 100 years ago, hoards of out-of-state visitors climbed on trains to visit Seeley Lake for its downhill skiing along the Double Arrow Ranch. The hill, one of the first in Montana's history, recently got a touch up with new signs showing the past adventurers who once came to Seeley Lake just for the rope tow. Children of ski hill creator Bob Manchester joined to see the legacy their family has brought to the area. "It was the thing to do before World War II," said Kenny Manchester, son of...
