Blackhawks Getting Faster By the Week

MISSOULA - With just a few weeks before they head to the district track meet, the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks keep pushing themselves to new levels. More than a dozen Boys and Girls set new personal records (PR) last week.

The team started out the week taking on athletes from Big Sky High School, Deer Lodge, Arlee and Drummond April 17.

The Boys relay teams shined as usual, taking first in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter. The Boys B team came in third in the 4x400.

The Boys top finishers were Logan Maughan and Dakota Wood. Maughan took first in the 400 and second in the 1600-meter while Wood set a PR in the triple jump and earned first place soaring 39 feet 1 inch and took second in the 100-meter.

The Girls relay teams took second in both relays behind Big Sky.

Bethany Hoag, Terra Bertsch and Autumn Morse were the Girls top finishers each taking second in the 800-meter, javelin and high jump respectively.

The Blackhawks finished up the week in Missoula April 21 at the Seeley-Swan Invitational.

The Boys took second place with 74 points behind Loyola Sacred Heart with 80 while the Girls finished in fifth with 45 points.

Once again, the Boys dominated the relays. Their 4x400 team consisting of Logan Robinson, Shelmerdine, Wood and Maughan not only took first but also put up the fastest time in Class C this season with a time of 3:35.96. That's less than a second off being the first team to auto qualify for state.

Maughan earned first place in both the 800 and 1600-meter while Shelmerdine won the 400-meter with Maughan right on his heels. Their times of 52.26 and 52.70 seconds are the fastest in the state Class C this season and were both PRs. Robinson set a PR and won the 200-meter with a time of 23.80 seconds.

For the Girls, Ashley Miller won the triple jump clearing 32 feet 11 inches. Bertsch set a PR in the high jump clearing 5 foot 2 inches for third place. Klaire Kovatch earned second in the discus with a throw of 116 feet 7 inches.

On the track, Hoag was the Girls' top finisher. She shaved 15 seconds off her 800-meter time crossing the line in 2:41.95 for a PR and third place. Lily Mercer earned fourth in the 400-meter. The girls relay teams took fourth in both relays.
