Condon voters approved two levies the Swan Valley Elementary School Board put on May ballots.
Just a little over $20,000 will be added to the school’s budget, about $10,000 into the general fund and about $10,000 for a technology fund, which the school didn’t have before presenting the technology levy to voters.
The timing of voted levies across the state couldn’t have been worse in many cases. For Condon voters, the early-March announced levy was right before extra property tax bills were sent out by Missoula County and just before the announced closure of Pyramid Mountain Lumber.
Kitty Logan, Swan Valley School Elementary School Board Chair, said she was elated that the levy passed, but that the district will still come up short in their budget and have to make some cuts. At the May 14 board meeting, a group of local Condon women attended and voiced their support for the school, wanting to help however they can. The women and the board brainstormed ways this could happen.
“I’m so appreciative to the people of Condon that passed this levy,” Logan said. “I can’t thank them enough.”
In Missoula, three out of the four voted levies for the Missoula Public Schools District — which includes Seeley-Swan High school — passed, including the elementary and high school districts’ general fund levy and the safety and security levy for the elementary school district, which will provide improvements to school security systems, upgrade safety technology and equipment and pay school counselors and behavioral interventionists. The safety and security levy for the high school district did not pass.
This story was updated online on May 22 to add that the Missoula Public Schools District levies included Seeley-Swan High School.
