Kids enjoy a day at the Capitol

Seeley Lake 7th and 8th grade students put their classroom government studies to direct use on April 18 as they toured state government in a "Day at the Capitol."

Using the theme that "government is people," they met throughout the day with officials in all three branches of government.

At the Legislature, local Rep. Janet Moore took the students onto the House floor and discussed current issues before the House as well as her experiences as a legislator. Later in the day, she also arranged a special "welcome" to the Seeley Lake students from the Speaker and full House.

Senator Pipinich also toured the students through the Senate Chambers and Capitol rotunda. The classes also interviewed a House aide from Valier, Montana and legislative lobbyist from the Missoula Chamber of Commerce.

In the Executive branch, Governor Stephens met the students in his office reception room and evaluated the student groups. Superintendent of Schools Nancy Keenan visited with Seeley students in her office and left them with a challenge to do their share as students in trying to build better schools in Montana.

Supreme Court Justice William Hunt talked to the students about how the judicial branch interrelates with the other two branches and his own experiences in Montana's highest court. He toured the student through the Supreme Court chambers.

Brownies party Mexican style

Seeley Lake Brownie Troops 448 and 253 recently held their Annual Father Daughter Dinner and this year's theme was Mexican Fiesta.

After a hearty meal of Mexican delicacies prepared by troop leaders Denyne Adams, Shelley Alsup, Shauna Anders, Jodie Miller, Jaimie Stroh and Tammie Westcott, the Brownies and their dads were ready to dance.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was a traditional Mexican hat dance. Brownies and their fathers circled a large sombrero, and to a boom box emitting a Mexican melody, everyone did the Mexican hat dance.

Brownie Troop 253 Leader Shauna Anders urged dads to, "remember this moment when you dance with your daughters at their weddings."

After working up an appetite dancing, the evening culminated in a dessert auction. Each girl brought a dessert which she had prepared for the auction to help raise money for the troop and defray the costs of the dinner. With auction cash bought with real money, the girls got to bid on the dessert of their choice. Auctioneer Linda Weaver did the honors auctioning off the desserts.

Brownie Troop 253 included girls in the first grade and Brownie Troop 448 included second and third grade girls. Brownies meet weekly after school to have fun working on "Try-IT" projects and participating in community service activities. This fall a new Junior Scout Troop will begin to accommodate fourth through sixth grade girls.
