Boys basketball working on its own tradition

At the start of practice on Dec. 7, head coach Mike Haines shouted four things at his players. Each one responded in unison.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to compete. I am aggressive and relentless. I have no fear of losing or making mistakes. I never give up," the team shouts before warming up.

That formula is key to Haines's team success this year, as the Blackhawks hope to make a run at district and divisional playoffs with a large team. Haines said he is looking forward to establishing their brand of basketball with a younger, but experienced team.

Four seniors are listed on the roster this winter, and three have played for four years. Cannon Hawkinson, who sat out because of injuries in the past, will return to the team for his final year as a Blackhawk.

The saying started about two years ago. Last year the team had a 12-win season, but failed to secure the district title. He said he is looking forward to getting some big games on the road and coaching each player through difficulties.

The team is looking to set the tone when Superior High School comes to town on Dec. 15, followed by another home game versus Thompson Falls on Dec. 16

"We have a good start, let's definitely continue that as we wake up and get into our games," Haines said.
