Property tax deadline extended

Missoula County has announced a later property tax due date after officials said the state sent tax roll information late.

The new deadline for property tax bills will be Friday, Dec. 8, according to an Oct. 25 press release. Paper bills must be postmarked by the date.

Usually tax bills must be sent to the county by Nov. 30. With the delay, bills are reaching residents the first week of November. Although residents will get a physical bill, the county encouraged those who could to pay online at missoulataxes.us.

People can also drop off their bill in person at the County Clerk and Treasurer’s Office in an orange box, or the blue courthouse dropbox on the west side of the building by Woody Street.

The county previously passed a 5.6% increase to next year’s budget, which is under the estimated 6% inflation the state experienced in the last year. One change expected to show up on bills is a lower number of school equalization mills, which help balance out poorer and richer school budgets.

A vast majority of counties — 49 out of 56 — have opted to lower their taxable mills from 99 to 77.89. While county officials say the change will keep schools funded at the same levels

as last year, the Governor’s Office has launched a lawsuit arguing that the change in mills will hurt worse-off schools across the state.

A new petition filed by the Montana Association of Counties to the Supreme Court on Oct. 30 is the fourth lawsuit to be drawn from the disagreement.
