A message on kindness

Lately, I’ve been more and more concerned as people I know voice their worries about the world we live in. As things get worse, more friends ask the same question: “But, what can I do? I’m just one person. How can I make a difference? We certainly live in a world plagued by hate, division, and distrust. In an environment such as this…how does anyone stay positive about anything anymore? As life becomes increasingly difficult, negative, and more and more depressing…how can we possibly make a difference for good?

For me part of the answer can be given in one word, kindness. Kindness has the potential to transform lives, heal wounds, and bridge the gaps between individuals and communities, and it starts with you and me. Through kindness, we can make a positive impact on the world and, in the process, improve ourselves. But, true kindness requires action on our part. If we really want to make a difference, we need to look for opportunities for service to others. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering, mountain moving acts of kindness. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness have the largest impact. Small acts of kindness, whether it’s a smile, a kind word, or a gesture of support, can brighten someone’s day and restore their faith in humanity. You never know when you can be just what someone else needed that day.

What if I don’t feel kind towards others? We all have those days. Start changing your outlook and attitude towards others in small but achievable ways. Seek to understand, not criticize. Smile more and complain less. Be a little quicker to love and less quick to judge. Forgive…often. Begin to do these things in your family first. As you consistently do these things, you will be changing the world for good. One person at a time, one family at a time, and soon…one community at a time. When we act in kindness, we create a positive ripple effect that can spread far and wide. Our actions inspire others, creating a chain reaction of compassion and understanding. In a world full of hate, division and distrust, this can be a catalyst for positive change.

Ultimately, kindness is a choice. When we make that choice, kindness is a simple yet profound act that can uplift both the giver and the receiver. When we choose kindness, we choose to see the humanity in others, to recognize their struggles and joys, and to extend a helping hand or a word of encouragement. It is a reminder that we are all interconnected and our actions can help make positive change in ourselves and others.

In a world that often feels divided and filled with animosity, kindness is more important than ever. With a little effort towards kindness, we can have a profound impact on the world around us, fostering connection, understanding and trust. So…let’s choose kindness and create positive change with those closest to us, and then in a world that sorely needs it.
