When the editor goes birding

Asa Thomas Metcalfe

A pod of American white pelicans group together on a submerged log in the flooded area near Nevada Lake in Helmville. The area is not listed as a known nesting ground in a 2019 report by the Montana Audubon Society. The high water levels across the state have created new habitats for waterfowl who are on their annual migration north. Places like Nevada Lake may see unusual species of birds while the water levels are high. American white pelicans generally summer in the great plains or mountainous west, as far north as Alberta or Saskatchewan.
