Children's book review: Mighty Jack

Mighty Jack is one of the best graphic novels I've read in awhile.

It is a modern twist on Jack and the Beanstalk written and illustrated by the super talented Ben Hatke.

As readers we are quickly dropped into Jack's world, which centers around his single mom and sister Maddie who doesn't speak. Life changes drastically when Maddie urges Jack to trade his mom's car keys for a bunch of seeds at a flea market. His sister spearheads the planting of the seeds, becoming more obsessed with the garden and magical plants.

The siblings are joined by their spirited neighbor Lilly who also believes something special is happening in their backyard.

Despite being split on how to move forward with the growing vines and stalks, one thing is for certain- the garden is dangerous.

Jack, Maddy and Lilly are about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime.
