Seeley Reads challenge promoted via biweekly podcast

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Reads is a biweekly podcast hosted by Carrie Benton, Seeley-Swan High School (SSHS) library tech and Haley Haines, SSHS Paraprofessional & Family Resource Coordinator. The podcast highlights the Missoula Public Library 2023 reading challenge, "Missoula Reads."

"Our podcast is about books, we're total nerds and we love books," said Benton at the beginning of their introductory podcast. "We want to promote the library, the reading challenge and the equipment that's available for everyone to use."

The reading challenge has been ongoing for seven years at the Missoula Public Library and this is the first year it's been brought to Seeley Lake. Patrons may order books from Missoula Library and have them delivered to the Seeley Lake library.

Using the podcasting equipment recently donated by Missoula's Community Media Resource (MCAT), Benton and Haines plan to use the podcast to highlight each of the 50 categories of books that challenge participants select from in order to read 50 books in 2023.

"I had been thinking about doing a virtual book club so that anyone, anywhere could participate," said Haines. "With Missoula Reads 2023 right around the corner, it seemed like good timing. I had also been thinking of a podcast for quite awhile, but the equipment was expensive. One day while talking to Benton, she mentioned that all the podcast equipment had just showed up."

"Bringing our love for reading and curiosity about the podcasting equipment gave us the podcast idea," said Carrie Benton, SSHS library tech.

The 50 categories of books in the reading challenge include topics such as  "Leaves on the Cover"," Author's Last Name Starts with a Vowel", "Set In a Place You'd Like to Visit", "Transportation", "Civil Rights", "Spooky" and "Lots of Photos". During the podcast, the creative interpretation of some of those topics will be discussed, said Benton.

"I love reading. It's always been one of my favorite things," said Haines. "When I was a kid my parents got me one of those reading lights that clip onto the book. I never had a problem reading, stopping reading and going to sleep became the problem."

"I hope people will leave comments on the Sound Cloud podcast platform, or the library facebook page to let us know what they're reading," said Benton."We'll give them a shout-out on the podcast."

Books read for any other purpose can be included in the challenge, provided they fit into a category, and are only used in one category, states the Missoula Reads guidelines. Print, audio or electronic books are all valid as well.

Forms with the book categories are available at the Seeley Lake Library in the High School for participants. Forms are due by December 29, 2023 to be eligible for a small prize. One book per category must be read and recorded on the forms available at the library.

"Are you participating in the challenge?" asked Benton. "Send us a message on facebook or stop in the library and we can give you a shout out on the podcast."
