Kindness helps reindeer take flight

SWAN VALLEY - While all the reindeer cadets attending the School of Reindeer in the North Pole thought flying would be a piece of cake, they quickly realized it was not as easy as it looked and Reindeer Cadet Angel (Jade Arnold) was disappointed there was no cake. Despite sub-zero temperatures the evening of Dec. 21, the gymnasium was packed for the Swan Valley School's performance of "How to Train Your Reindeer (to Fly)."

Professor Atticus Antler (Kalli Braulik) and Schoolmaster Joe Buck (Stetson Hulett) announced that the reindeer cadets had completed their academic training and now were entering flight training. Coach Catapult (Hoyt Thompson) was assigned to teach them how to use their magic abilities to fly.

The first training flights went askew and only two of the reindeer could fly. The cadets couldn't figure out why but thought perhaps they were not focused since they were still laughing at the elves who dropped all their packages.

The elves' feelings were hurt and they brought their concerns to Mrs. Claus (Molly Williams). She spoke to the cadets and they agreed they acted rudely.

"We acted like hot shots," said reindeer cadet Amelia (Kaleesi Phillips).

Santa (Gunner Braulik) said there is more to a good reindeer than flying.

Mrs. Claus agreed saying a good education and positive attitude are important. Others added good work ethic and above all good character.

"When your kindness comes to light, your heart of gold will give you flight," Mrs. Claus said.

After apologizing to the elves, the reindeer cadets were able to harness the magic within and take flight.

The program closed with a selection of Christmas carols and holiday favorites performed by the Junior High Band.

Music Director Aaron Morgenstern said, "These students have done a great job putting this all together...Thank you to [everyone] who has helped make this possible. We couldn't have done it without you."
