A 60-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Wednesday night, Dec. 21, while stopping to assist in a vehicle slide-off on Hwy. 200 near Potomac.
Montana State Trooper Wes Whitlatch said that the initial call of a non-injury slide-off near mile marker 18 came in at about 6:30 p.m.
Whitlatch said a family in a pick-up truck and a woman driving an SUV stopped to help. The man was underneath the snow-trapped vehicle hooking up a tow strap and the woman was standing near the shoulder when a 68-year-old male driving an SUV exited the roadway to the right. The SUV sideswiped the open driver door of the pickup, struck and killed the woman, then crashed into the rear of the trapped car with the male underneath. The male was transported to St. Patrick’s Hospital with serious injuries. A female occupant of the trapped vehicle was also transported to St. Patrick’s with injuries.
The male driver who collided with the vehicle was booked into the Missoula County Jail for vehicular homicide while under the influence and negligent vehicular assault.
The name of the woman who was killed has not been released, but Whitlatch confirmed she was local. The investigation is ongoing.
