Kitty Logan awarded $25,000

Two Montana teachers had a very good Tuesday.

In two special mystery assemblies held at their respective schools on Tuesday, October 8, the unsuspecting teachers were told by State Supt. Linda McCulloch that they had each been selected to receive the 2002 Milkcn Family Foundation National Educator Award. This honor comes with an unrestricted cash award of $25,000.

The two educators who re-ceived awards are:

• Katherine (Kitty) Logan, Principal and teacher, Swan Valley School, Condon.

• Julie Cajune, Indian Education Director, Ronan Public Schools.

Until they heard the surprise announccments, the two awardees did not even know they were being considered for the Milkcn Family Foundation National Educator award.

Candidates cannot apply for the award themselves, nor can they be nominated. Montana candidates for the award program were identified by the Ofiice of Public Instruction based on their exemplary commitment to excellence, outstanding educational leadership, including the ability to motivate students and innovation in teaching methods.

Sojourn at the Wall

Just about every Montanan has seen photographs of the Chinese Wall, deep within the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. But, relatively few have actually been there. The premiere tourist attraction of the “Bob” is not an easy trip, being situation some 40 trail miles from the western flank of the wilderness. For many years, I had been wanting to get a glimpse of this magnificent escar p.m.ent and the opportunity finally arose in August when I embarked on a pack trip with the Double Arrow Outfitters.

Our trip began early on a bright clear Wednesday morning at the packer camp near Holland Lake. Excitement was in the air as the mules were loaded and the horses saddled…
