Clipper logging: A sign of things to come

Loggers in our woods are changing the way they do business and the results appear to be good, both for the loggers and for the land.

Small timber companies are finding themselves caught between old-growth forest management techniques and new innovations for harvesting younger trees. The likely outcome of the dilemma appears to be fewer clearcuts and better utilization of trees.

Ron Richards, Seeley Lake, has been working the woods for many years. In the 1960s, he and his family operated a portable stud mill in the Seeley Lake area. When that market took a downturn, Richards went to work as a logger in old-growth stands. This summer, he returned to the work of harvesting small-diameter trees on Plum Creek Lands...

20 years ago: September 26, 2002 issue

$35,447 awarded to museum effort

The Board of Trustees for the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula has awarded the Seeley Lake Historical Museum and Visitor Center the "Preserving Missoula County's History Grant," $35,447, for the construction and restoration of the historical Double Arrow barn. This is the first award of the newly instituted annual program.

Robert Brown, Executive Director at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula, related that "This is a very worthwhile local history project and the Board at Fort Missoula greatly appreciates all of the efforts that have already been expended on this project. We look forward to working with this project and anticipate good things to come..."
