Horseshoe Hills maintenance funding approved

MISSOULA - In a meeting on June 28, the Missoula Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) unanimously approved a funding recommendation decision for the Horseshoe Hills Spring Creek Road Maintenance project.

Submitted by Jack Rich, owner and guide at the Rich’s Montana Guest Ranch and Outdoor Adventures and the Forest Service, the project focuses on roadside brushing and ditch maintenance to allow and maintain winter trail grooming.

Originally owned by Plum Creek, the Seeley Lake Ranger District purchased the Horseshoe Hill Area in the early 2000’s and set aside money for high priority fuel projects. The area is in close proximity to the Blackfoot Clearwater Wildlife Management Area (aka Game Range) along with being a popular recreation area.

The members reviewed seven total project proposals and decided to fund projects involving watershed, maintenance and restoration. Missoula RAC was required to fund 50% of projects involving restoration, maintenance and watershed while the remaining 50% was allocated towards other priorities. During the meeting, Missoula RAC members reduced the amount of requested funding from $12,000 to $8,890.

The Rich Ranch is a family-owned ranch and outfitting business located off Cottonwood Lakes Road. The ranch specializes in recreational activities, including pack trips, camping and snowmobiling during the winter.
