Appreciative for prayer in school

Letter to the Editor

I very much appreciate Seeley Lake Elementary Superintendent/Principal Josh Gibbs allowing people who wanted to pray for the school and the children of Seeley Lake to enter the building. It’s just incredible to me that we have devolved into not wanting people to pray over our schools and children. I’m thankful that someone had the sense to appreciate that the group wanted to do that.

If the reason for not allowing it is that it “is opening the floor to all types of religious groups,” I would say, “So?”

If it becomes a security issue, then limit it to outside only. Clearly, this group doesn’t want to get in the way of school activities. If security of the building is not an issue, let them in at appropriate times.

Community use of schools has gone to court many times recently in this nation. More and more it is coming out in favor of the religious groups that want to use the grounds for good intent. It is encouraging that local citizens often back those who are being discriminated against.

If the board decides to start making those decisions, it might be a good move. But let’s stop believing there is some kind of “separation of church and State” in the U.S. Constitution. You won’t find it in there. It’s a relatively short read. Pick one up and see.
