Girl Scouts cookie season in full swing, thankful for support

SEELEY LAKE - For the first time in nearly a decade, Girl Scout cookies arrived in Seeley Lake. Seeley Lake Troop #3436, a new troop that started this fall, pre-sold more than 4,000 boxes of cookies and looks forward to offering cookies at booths on Saturdays while supplies last.

Troop Leader Chantel Lynch was excited to get a troop started again in Seeley Lake.

"I was a Girl Scout when I was a little girl and had so much fun doing it," Lynch said. "I wanted my daughter to experience it as well."

There are currently 13 girls in the troop, ages six and up, and four adult volunteers. So far the girls have attended a science event in Missoula and enjoyed learning how to ski at the Seeley Lake Nordic Trails.

To help fund activities, purchase supplies and attend camps, Troop #3436 embraced Girl Scout Cookie Sales, the only fundraiser approved by the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming. All of the net revenue raised through the Girl Scout Cookie Program stays with the local council and troops. The troop receives $0.50 per box sold and the individual Girl Scouts worked towards their personal selling goals for prizes or monetary rewards. The most popular cookies were the classic Thin Mints and Samoas with Adventurefuls, the newest cookie variety, coming in third.

The Troop #3436's cookies arrived on two pallets Thursday morning, March 24. Due to a problem at the bakery, only about half of the order for two of the most popular cookies, the Adventurefuls and Samoas, shipped. Additional boxes for the cookie booths are also expected in the next couple of weeks.

"The first year doing cookies was very fun and a learning experience for the girls but also very hectic," Lynch said. "We knew people would be excited to get cookies from Seeley Lake Girl Scouts but I didn't expect it to be so crazy and high demanding."

Lynch said the troop underestimated the amount of cookies to order for the cookie booths. After selling more than 250 boxes at the first booth at the Mission Mountains Mercantile in Condon, they are going fast. Booths are scheduled every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. through April 16 in Seeley Lake (Rovero's April 2 pending cookie delivery, Cory's Valley Market April 9 and Montana Gas N Shop April 16), in Ovando outside the Blackfoot Angler April 2 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Depending on the cookie supply, Troop #3436 may also work booths in Missoula at Walmart on Mullan Road April 9 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Seeley Lake Troop #3436 is grateful for the businesses that allowed the troop to set up a Cookie Booth outside their business and appreciates all the community support. Thanks to the money raised, Lynch hopes to offer monthly events and community projects through the summer with the troop.

"It means so much to the girls to have this many people in the community show us support," Lynch said. "The girls are so filled with joy and thank every single person that bought cookies!"
