Blackhawks soar at first track meet of the season

CORVALLIS - Seeley Swan High School's track team competed against athletes from 17 A, B and C class schools at the first meet of the season March 26.

Seeley-Swan's returning state champions Walker McDonald, Owen Hoag and Sariah Maughan all showed they are back to defend their titles.

McDonald took first place in the discus with a throw of 161 feet, just 4 feet shy of his best throw last year. He won by nearly 20 feet over Seeley-Swan's Klayton Kovatch. Kovatch took second place and extended his personal record by more than 8 feet to 142 feet 3 inches.

In the Shot Put, McDonald took second with a throw of 48 feet 8.25 inches, more than 2.5 feet farther than his first throw last year.

Hoag won the 400-meter in 51.52 seconds. He crossed the line nearly two seconds ahead of second place and 1.42 seconds behind his best from last year. Hoag also had a strong finish in the 200-meter coming in second with a time of 23.57.

S. Maughan blew past the competition to win the 400-meter with a time of 1:00.85, less than 2 seconds behind her fastest time last year.

Other top finishers included Chase Haines and Emily Maughan. Haines won the 110-meter hurdles and took second in the 300-meter hurdles while E. Maughan won the long jump and took third in the 100-meter.

Several new faces were on the track as well with Seeley Swan's freshmen setting their first times of their high school career. Top freshmen finishers for the Boys include Seth Dunster who was second in JV 400-meter and Zach Best who took second in the JV 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the JV 300-meter hurdles.

The top freshmen Girls were Amaiya Dalrymple who took seventh in varsity 400-meter and Alison Kilpatrick who took fifth in the varsity 100-meter hurdles.

This week Seeley-Swan heads to the Frenchtown Invitational April 2.
