Alert regarding At-Home Test Kits

Letter to the Editor

This is just a heads up “ FYI “ in reference to the free home COVID-19 test kits being handed out by the Seeley Lake Fire Department. Per an alert on national news, the test kits have a toxic chemical in the ingredients called Sodium Azide. It was indicated that the toxic chemical could lead to hospitalization and complications from low blood pressure.

So out of curiosity, I researched the ingredients that should have been on the box or at least within it. No information is provided in the kits.

An online search eventually led to a Safety Data Sheet that is recommended to all doctors as it isn’t included. This SDS indicates that the plastic part of the detection card in the AccessBio test kit has the toxic chemical Sodium Azide. The quantity is less than 0.0001%. This is below the notifiable threshold for this substance.

This may be a concern to some or it may not be an issue. But it is in fact information all people should have access to before using a product that may have undesirable effects.
