Potomac School Christmas program brings down the house

POTOMAC - This year's Potomac School Christmas Program brought more than 130 people together for the community event with standing room only. Last year's audience numbers were strictly limited due to COVID restrictions. This year the large crowd was smiling, hugging and laughing as they took photos and clapped while watching the students perform.

The evening began with a welcome by Principal John Rouse followed by the winner of the eighth grade quilt raffle. The horse-themed quilt was made by Potomac's Janette Ployhar and was won by student Isabella Flammound.

The elective class for grades sixth through eighth played the chimes and included favorites and classics like "Silent Night", "Jingle Bells", "Carol of the Bells" and "Here Comes Santa Claus."

The preschool class, led by teacher Jodi Hausemann and aide Kayla Brewer, sang their hearts out loud and clear, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," complete with some dance moves and actions.

Terri Klein's first grade class sang "Here Comes Santa Claus" while performing some freestyle moves. Then the second and third graders were "Up on the Housetop" for their tune. "Frosty the Snowman" was next sung by the fourth graders.

The fifth graders sang and danced to "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" with a surprise saxophone solo "lip synced" by student Ivy VanGrinsven.

Students Brianna Kirkham and Marlie Howard performed a duet for the song "You Make It Feel like Christmas."

The audience laughter following the skit "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" turned silent and thoughtful as the sixth graders sang "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman."

Next, the seventh grade took the stage and sang "12 Days of Christmas in Potomac." Seventh grader Brayden Cooney rewrote the song. It included snippets like seven hunters hunting, six settlers trapping and five sticks of kindling. After their song was over, student Oliver Caton did an impromptu backflip and then the class calmly walked off stage.

The eighth graders then sang "Run, Run, Rudolph" and threw some jazz into it with their movements. Buckets were brought out onto the stage after that, and the sixth through eighth elective class played "OTG" and "Rockin' Out" on the drums. Parents commented on how great the drum sounds were and the students really got into it.

Teacher Christi Taileffer directed the program and students made the decorations. There were trees above and lining the stage created by the art class students, taught by Potomac resident Natalie Howard.

The evening ended as it began, full of smiles.
