Turkey Drive helps fill Food Bank shelves

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley –Swan High School Leos Club raised $1,240 and two turkeys for the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank during their fourth annual Turkey Drive. Students collected donations at the Post Office, Rovero's and Cory's Valley Market throughout the day Thursday, Nov. 19.

"These kids do this every year and it is just fantastic what they do for the Food Bank," said Karen Montgomery, President of the Food Bank. "Thank you, thank you."

The Leos Club started the Turkey Drive in 2017. Since the Seeley Lake Lions Club, the parent organization to the Leos Club, does the Holiday baskets at Christmas, the Leos chose to do their service project around Thanksgiving because there was no longer a community Thanksgiving dinner served in Seeley Lake.

The first year they raised $750 and collected 10 turkeys. The Leos broke the $1,000 mark in 2019 by raising more than $1,300. While they did not do the turkey drive in 2020 due to COVID, this year's donations bring them just shy of $4,100 and 18 turkey donated to the Food Bank.

"It is just amazing," said Leos Advisor and Seeley Lake Lion Mary Stone.

Eight Leos participated this year: Sara Stevenson, Hattie Batchelder, Regan Jones, Tyler Haines, Emily Maughan, Cora Stone, Sariah Maughan and Tegan Mauldin.

The students said it was a lot of fun getting to be out in the community and visit with members of the public about the Turkey Drive, the need at the local Food Bank and the Leos Club. They felt it was a really good cause and were excited to raise so much money.

Stone added the opportunity to be out in the community has been a really nice change from last year.

"Just the opportunity to do it was a blessing," Jones said.

Batchelder added, "We want to thank everyone for donating."
