Clearwater Junction intersection recommendations made

SEELEY LAKE - Residents and travelers will have two opportunities to learn more about the findings and recommendations from the Clearwater Junction Intersection study. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will host an in-person and virtual open house on Nov. 18.

“Clearwater Junction serves as a connection for much of western Montana,” Bob Vosen, Missoula District Administrator, said. “The project team has been evaluating this intersection to find an option that will best meet residents’ and travelers’ needs all year long.”

Both open houses will review the evaluation processes and findings and will allow the project team to answer questions, and address concerns. The virtual open house will be held Nov. 18 at 12 p.m. via Zoom. Registration is required. Those interested in attending may do so at bit.ly/clearwaterjunctionintersection.

The in-person open house will be held Nov. 18 in the West Wing of the Seeley Lake Community Foundation building, 3150 Highway 83. There will be no formal presentation and attendees are welcome to come any time between 4:30 - 7 p.m.

Located at the intersection of Highway 200 and Highway 83, Clearwater Junction is not just home to the iconic steer statue. Travelers frequently stop to visit the convenience store, weigh station, rest area and the busiest boat check station in the state. Over the years, intersection traffic has increased and multiple crashes including one fatality have been reported.

The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) identified the intersection as being in need of improvements to alleviate traffic and safety concerns, prompting MDT to partner with engineering firm Robert Peccia & Associates (RPA) to evaluate options.

Using a process called Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE), the project team has assessed several alternatives to determine the most appropriate option to address the intersection’s unique challenges.

Those who are unable to attend either open house may send questions or comments to Kristine Fife at kristine@bigskypublicrelations.com or call (406) 207-4484, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
