Local Food Bag Drive at Cory’s Valley Market

SEELEY LAKE - The Veterans and Families of Seeley Lake (VFSL) started their annual food drive at Cory’s Valley Market to support the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank through the holiday season. Items needed at the Food Bank are pre-packaged into bags that are available to purchase for $10. After purchase, the bag is dropped off in the box near the exit of the store. The bags are delivered to the Food Bank to help keep the shelves stocked.

This program runs through Dec. 15. VFSL appreciates the community’s support.

Swan Valley Library highlights

Swan Valley - The Swan Valley Library will be holding a book chat about “Home Waters” by John Maclean. The Maclean family owns a cabin that his grandfather Reverend John Maclean built by hand in Seeley Lake, his “home waters.”

John is the son of the author of “A River Runs Through It” Norman Maclean. In the book he elaborates on the characters in the former book. He tells of his grandfather who introduced the family to fishing in the rivers around the cabin, the Blackfoot and the Swan. Also, of Norman who balanced his life between his profession as a professor at the University of Chicago and Montana’s fascination for him.

It tells more of the tragic death of Norman’s brother Paul, revealing more details which John discovered in his research. The author speaks of the Native American trail along the Blackfoot River in places that remains to this day. He calls it a land “with a long-term memory”. Maclean says that the Lewis and Clark Pass located on the trail is one of the “most breathtaking in Montana.”

A review of the book says it is “A universal story about the power of place to shape families, and a celebration of the art of fishing. Maclean’s memoir beautifully portrays the inextricable ways our personal histories are linked to the places we come from - our home waters.”

Books are available at the library to check out. The book chat will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.

The Swan Valley Library is located on Highway 83 in Condon and is just north and adjacent to the Swan Valley Community Hall. The library is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information call 406-754-2521.
