New fires in the Jocko and north of Condon

There are two large fires in the area as of this week.

The Crooks fire was discovered July 23 and is approximately six miles west of the DNRC border, south of the Jocko Road, and eight miles southeast of Arlee, Montana. As of press time it was 705 acres.

The Jocko Road is closed at the CSKT Reservation divide/ Montana DNRC border (adjacent to Seeley Lake Ranger District lands) due to increased fire activity from the Crooks fire.

The Whitetail Creek Fire was discovered Aug. 1 north of Fatty Creek in the Swan Valley. As of press time it is 330 acres and is actively being suppressed.

Veteran Memorial Plaques available to families

SEELEY LAKE – The Veterans and Families of Seeley Lake would like to return the wooden veteran memorial plaques to the veterans’ families. Now that the new Veterans Memorial Kiosk has been installed and the metal plaques mounted, all the wooden plaques have been removed.

Applicants sought for Swan Valley Community Council

Swan Valley - The Missoula County Commissioners are seeking applicants to fill the remainder of a vacant term that runs through May 31, 2023 on the Swan Valley Community Council. At that time, if the council member wishes to continue serving, they will need to file as a candidate in the 2023 special district elections. Council members act as a liaison between the citizens of the Swan Valley area and the county commissioners, providing information deemed useful, beneficial and helpful in decisions that affect the community. Applicants must be residents of the Swan Valley community. Meetings are required; the council meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The deadline to submit applications is 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31. Applications are available at https://boards.missoulacounty.us/apply/. For more information, contact Administrative Assistant Kyla Lehnerz at klehnerz@missoulacounty.us.

Weekly COVID-19 update

As of Aug. 2, there have been 116,634 cases of COVID-19 in Montana. There have been 896,677 doses of vaccines administered and 443,670 Montanans fully immunized. There are 1,341 active cases, 5,732 total hospitalizations with 112 active, 113,585 recoveries and 1,708 deaths in Montana due to COVID-19 complications. Missoula County has had 9,680 cases, 158 active cases, 9,421 recovered and 101 COVID-related deaths to date.
