Jewelry artist presents pieces from various materials

Seeley Lake Market Spotlight

SEELEY LAKE - Tarkio jewelry artist Sarah Carson offers a large collection of handcrafted stone and wooden jewelry at Seeley Lake Market on Sundays.

When COVID-19 hit last year, she left her job as a nurse in ER to pursue her passion of hand making jewelry in a more serious capacity.

"It's been quite a blessing," she said. "I've had a rock passion for a lot of years and [now] I can tumble local stones from Montana and make some jewelry out of that as well."

This is her first year working as a merchant for the Seeley Lake Market but her second year pursuing this passion seriously. She said she has been making jewelry for around 30 years. She believes her passion for her craft began when she told her mom that she wanted to make a bracelet for herself and her mom bought her the first stones she used.

"It keeps me busy and it's fun creating beautiful things that I can share with others," she said.

For her wooden jewelry she makes the designs on a computer and then cuts it out with a laser cutter. She does lapidary work on her stone jewelry which allows her to develop "some pretty interesting designs."

Some of her most popular products are her gemstone and wooden earrings.

Outside of the Seeley Lake Market, Carson participates in Missoula's Saturday markets, as well as Frenchtown's and Bigfork's Wednesday markets. She can also be found on Facebook and Instagram under Tarkio Earth Elements. She said she loves coming out to the markets to socialize with her customers.

"It's just great," she said. "We get out and see people. I am a mom of two young boys and I live on a farm so we're pretty isolated. Getting out and talking to people in the community is pretty awesome."
