Blackhawks return to the track

CORVALLIS - Athletes from 15 schools across western Montana converged at the Blue Devil Invitational March 27 for the first high school track meet in nearly two years. Seeley-Swan High School was one of six Class C schools who joined seven Class A and two Class B schools.

The Seeley-Swan Girls took third place with 77 points behind Corvallis with 97 and Beaverhead County with 103. The Boys finished in sixth place with 50 points while Hamilton took the top spot with 111 points.

On the track, Sariah Maughan led the Girls with first places in the 400 and 800-meter races. Kyla Conley took third place in the 400-meter while Emily Maughan added points with fourth place finishes in the 100 and 400.

The Girls 4x400 relay team consisting of Hannah Ayers, Klaire Kovatch, Sariah and Emily took first place while the 4x100 team of Trista Alexander, Klaire, Sariah and Emily took second.

In the field events, Klaire picked up where she left off two years ago throwing 149-05 feet for first place in the Discus. The throw was more than 20 feet farther than second place and just nine inches short of her school record.

Emily and Hannah placed third and fifth in the Long Jump clearing 15-03 and 14-10.5 respectively. Kyla Conley took fourth in the High Jump clearing 4-08 feet.

On the Boys' side, Owen Hoag had the top individual finish on the track taking second in the 400-meter. Sawyer Shelmerdine came in fourth in the 200 and 400-meter. The Boys 4x400 relay team of Chase Haines, Klayton Kovatch, Sawyer and Owen took third, just one hundredth of a second behind second place. Their short relay missed a handoff and didn't finish.

Walker McDonald took first place in the Shot Put and Discus with throws of 44-11 and 140-06 feet. Both throws auto qualified him for State. Klayton took fourth in the discus and fifth in the Long Jump.

This week the team heads to Bigfork April 23.
