Lady Blackhawks defend Divisional Title

DEER LODGE - The Lady Blackhawks won the Western C Divisional Championship for the second year in a row defeating Shields Valley, Ennis and Manhattan Christian Feb. 24-26. They remain undefeated as they head to state.

The Lady Blackhawks met the Shields Valley Rebels in the opening round of the tournament and quickly took control of the scoreboard. They put up 10 points before the Rebels would score their first basket. By the half the Lady Blackhawks led 40-15 and they finished them off 69-43.

Emily Maughan led the Ladies scoring 19 points followed by Sariah Maughan with 15 and Bethany Hoag with 13. Emily hit 5 of 6 free throws while Sariah was dialed in from the three-point line sinking 3 of 4 attempted.

The Lady Blackhawks then faced the Ennis Mustangs in the semifinal. After a hard fought first quarter, the Lady Blackhawks finally were able to put some space between them and the Mustangs in the second quarter. They led at the half 30-17 and maintained control of the rest of the game. The final score was 52-42.

Aspen Conley led the Lady Blackhawks against the Mustangs with 13 points including three three-pointers. Klaire Kovatch and Emily also scored into the double digits with 12 and 10 respectively.

The Lady Blackhawks were phenomenal from the free-throw line hitting 12 of 14. Kyla Conley and Bethany shot 100% with Kyla hitting 5 and Bethany 3. Emily and Sariah each had 2 of 3.

In the championship match, the Lady Blackhawks faced the undefeated Manhattan Christian Eagles.

The Lady Blackhawks took a commanding lead in the first quarter putting up 20 points to the Eagles' 5. The Eagles fought back and chiseled away at the Lady Blackhawks' advantage throughout the rest of the game. The Lady Blackhawks held off a late charge by the Eagles defeating them 57-51.

Sariah scored 20 points to lead the Lady Blackhawks. She hit 5 of 7 from the free throw line. Bethany scored 12 points including a pair of three-pointers and Klaire had 10 points. Trista Wendel also scored a pair of three-pointers.

The Lady Blackhawks will face Roy-Winifred in their opening game March 10 at the State C Tournament in at Lockwood High School in Lockwood, Montana near Billings. Advanced tickets are on sale at the SSHS Office Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for all Lady Blackhawk games. Please make checks payable to Lockwood Schools.
