Board votes to extend ice rink agreement

Seeley Lake Elementary School Board

SEELEY LAKE - Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) School Board members unanimously voted to extend their ice rink agreement with Seeley Lake Regional Outdoor Center for Kinetic Sports (ROCKS) for another three years during their monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19. They also approved hiring for various positions and continued updating their 2000’s policy series.

ROCKS Board members Garry Swain and Scott Eggeman spoke to the school board. SLE had a three year agreement with ROCKS that expired this year. The agreement allowed ROCKS to host the ice rink at the school with the organization carrying out volunteer hours and using their own insurance to cover the recreational area.

ROCKS recently received a $2,700 grant from Missoula County. They also sent in a $2,000 grant application into the Seeley Lake Community Foundation. If the organization receives the foundation grant, a portion of the money would go towards helmets.

Swain said ROCKS has not yet found a permanent location for the rink and that students have found convenience in being able to ice skate right next to the school building.

During his report, Superintendent Josh Gibbs talked about the School Improvement Plan. The School Improvement Team is currently working on Kindergarten through eighth grade curriculum inventory, technology inventory, the school-wide behavior model and the Response to Intervention program.

The school is in the planning stages for the annual Winterfest. Right now the current tentative date is Feb. 6. Before too much planning can take place however, the school must first get its plan approved by the Missoula City-County Health Department.

As of Jan. 19, the school has not had any positive COVID-19 cases among staff or students.

In other business, the Board unanimously approved:

• Designating Board Chair Kyle Marx as the special voting agent to vote on behalf of the School District in the upcoming sewer bond election Feb. 23. The board will discuss how they will vote at an upcoming meeting.

• Hiring assistant custodian Shiann Chadwick.

• Hiring girls basketball coaches Brett Haines and Bradley Miller.

• Holding the 2021 election where the only seat up for election is Marx’s.

• Updates on their 2000’s policy series. Many of the updates clarified wording and removed typos. The Board also added Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day as days off while removing Good Friday. Certain portions were tabled for the next meeting.

The next board meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 17.
